FREven Simon Biles makes good use of self-affirmation.
Simon Biles stood confidently at the edge of the balance beam, her heart racing with nervous energy. As she took a deep breath and prepared to perform a complicated routine, she whispered something to herself – no one knows what it is, not even her adoring fans (yours truly included) waiting with bated breath for another of famed, heart-stopping performances. I am pretty sure, though, that it is a prayer or an appeal, definitely an affirmation.
As I watch her haul herself forward with the same voracious energy that have come to earmark her prowess as the Queen of Gymnastics, I could literarily feel the silent words she spoke to herself give invisible wings to her soul. As she leaped and balanced, leaped again and balanced, with effortless grace, on the narrow beam of the tool of her trade, I whispered reverently ‘Wow, the power of self-affirmation.’
We all want someone to affirm us, to tell us ‘well done,’ but how many of us take time to affirm ourselves, to pat ourselves on the back?
The irony of waiting for someone to affirm us is that our waiting is often in vain. The other irony is that even when they eventually come, those affirmations are usually accomoanied by unspoken but nonetheless inherent preconditions and, as such, less effective than if they had come from ourselves to ourselves.
So, let me ask you again, when was the last time you spoke words of affirmation to yourself?
