Before investing hours on end into trying to improve your capacity on any machine or movement, make sure you have dialed in your technique as much as possible. On the Ski Erg: -Reach tall to maximize stroke length. -Send the hips back to initiate a hinge using the hip flexors and midline to pull your body (along with the handles) down. -Follow through with your arms to finish the stroke. #jumpship #skierg @chynacho

Here’s the fix: ❌ Long, slow strokes = wasted power at the bottom ✅ Explosive hinge + quick reset = more watts, faster splits, less effort The drive phase at the top of the stroke is where the real power comes from. Spending time at the bottom doesn’t give you much return — it just burns you out. Let’s break it down: 
The damper setting on the side of the SkiErg controls how much air flows into the flywheel. More air = more resistance 🥵 Less air = less resistance 🪶
⠀
Think of it like gears on a bike: 🔸A high damper (7–10) is like riding uphill in a big gear — it’s heavy and slow, and you need serious power to keep it moving. 🔸A low damper (3–5) is like riding on flat ground — smoother, more fluid, and easier to sustain. ⠀
Here’s why that matters:
When you crank the damper too high without proper technique, your arms take over because you haven’t built the mechanics or strength to use your full body efficiently.

The result?
❌ You pull mostly with your upper body
❌ Your strokes feel choppy and laboured
❌ You fatigue quickly and lose rhythm
⠀
The fix? Lower your damper setting 👍🏼 
Start with a damper between 3–5, and shift your focus to using your entire posterior chain — hips, glutes, hamstrings, lats — rather than just yanking with your arms.

This allows for:
✅ More powerful and efficient strokes
✅ Better technique under fatigue
✅ Sustainable pacing for longer efforts

You’ll actually generate more force and speed with better body mechanics at a lower damper, especially in longer workouts or races like Hyrox. ⠀
