In the evening, your brain releases melatonin and lowers core body temperature to prepare for sleep. But if you ignore that first wave of sleepiness, your brain can release a second alertness signal to keep you functioning. Sleep researchers sometimes call this a “second wind.” It happens because your nervous system switches back into alert mode to prevent you from shutting down at the wrong time.
