Watching a CT scanner spin with its covers off is a terrifying glimpse into the extreme physics required for modern medicine. The rotating frame, known as the gantry, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds—about the same as a small car,yet it completes a full 360-degree revolution in as little as 0.25 seconds. At these speeds, the outer components of the scanner experience centrifugal forces of up to 40g. To put that in perspective, fighter pilots typically black out at 9g; if the scanner weren’t perfectly balanced with counterweights, the vibration would be powerful enough to shake the entire hospital building.
The engineering “magic” that allows this heavy machinery to spin indefinitely without tangling wires is Slip Ring Technology. Instead of traditional cables, the gantry uses large, conductive rings and stationary “brushes” to transfer power and data. Because the detectors are capturing thousands of images per second, the system must transmit data at speeds exceeding 10 Gigabits per second across this spinning gap. This is often done using “contactless” induction or even infrared lasers to beam the data from the rotating frame to the stationary computer, ensuring that the life-saving images of your heart or brain remain crystal clear despite the mechanical chaos happening just inches away.

Some tips on the Shaft earthing maintenance:
- Maintain it between 20mV-40mV
-Clean the brushes and slip ring with quick dry electroclean spray
- Tighten/ replace worn out brushes to maintain proper contact on the slip rings
- Remove the dirt with a cotton rag carefully
The shaft earthing meter should not read "Zero"mV when Main engine is running. Only when Engine is stopped, it will show "Zero"mV.

La componente che ruota vorticosamente si chiama “gantry”. Su questo anello sono montati il tubo radiogeno, che emette i raggi X, e i rilevatori digitali posizionati esattamente sul lato opposto. La massa in rotazione può pesare oltre mille chilogrammi, eppure deve muoversi con una precisione millimetrica. Nei macchinari moderni, questo anello compie una rotazione completa in circa 0,25-0,5 secondi.
La velocità è tale che i componenti interni sono sottoposti a una forza centrifuga brutale, che può superare i 70 G. Per fare un paragone, un pilota di Formula 1 subisce circa 5-6 G in curva, e un pilota di caccia addestrato può svenire a 9 G. La macchina deve resistere a sollecitazioni tredici volte superiori senza vibrare, poiché anche una minima oscillazione renderebbe le immagini diagnostiche inutilizzabili.
Una curiosità tecnica che pochi conoscono riguarda l’alimentazione: come fanno i cavi a non attorcigliarsi a quella velocità? La risposta è che non ci sono cavi. La TAC utilizza la tecnologia “slip ring” (anelli di scorrimento), un sistema di spazzole conduttive che strisciano su anelli metallici, permettendo il passaggio di corrente e dati dati verso la parte fissa del computer senza alcun vincolo fisico. Questa velocità estrema è necessaria per scansionare organi in movimento, come il cuore, congelando l’immagine in una frazione di secondo.
