🗣️ It’s World Day for Assistive Technology. Without my AAC device, the Smartbox Assistive Technology TalkPad 8, I wouldn’t be able to do half of what I do. I wouldn’t be able to give talks in schools. I wouldn’t be able to give talks to charities and organisations. I wouldn’t be able to answer people’s questions directly. I wouldn’t be able to write books that make kids feel seen. I wouldn’t be able to communicate clearly on my own terms. It’s taken me on a journey of self-acceptance to feel fully comfortable using assistive tech in public. People still stare sometimes. Some still talk to whoever is with me instead of talking to me. Some still ask, ‘Where’s your carer?’ when I’m out doing perfectly normal things. But this tech? It’s my voice. And I’m proud of it. It’s not just about communication. It’s about independence. About not being spoken for. About being taken seriously. Today, on World Day for Assistive Technology, I want you to be kind, empathetic, and patient when conversing with people who have speech impairments or are nonverbal, because this matters. Not because it makes us ‘better’. But because it gives us a choice. Control. Presence. A VOICE! Gracelyn & AAC Gracelyn is trialing the Smartbox from Talk 2 Me. We are playing some simple games and also using a CVI grid for communication. Hopefully, I'll have more to post later! It might seem like this is easy. Like, just look at the screen? So easy! But this is hard. This is so hard. It is adapted to her abilities and needs, but it is far from easy. There is a huge learning curve for anyone. The kids have tried, I have tried, Jason has tried, and we all agree this is not easy. Even in a fully functioning, typical, able-bodied body with pre-learned communication and coordination skills - this is hard. So, for Gracelyn, who struggles with vision, positioning, breathing, head and trunk control, who has very little learned communication or experience with screens or eye coordination - it is INCREDIBLE that she is doing this as well as she is!!! I just want to scream and shout about what a complete rockstar she is using this thing and how well she is doing! She is also having a blast - evidenced by her little "WOW!!" So far, we are liking this system. The downside, which is unavoidable, is this thing is a beast. It is so much heavier than a tablet. It is sturdy & must also have the eye gaze components, so it's understandable. But it is causing us to rethink her wheelchair options in the future. And that's okay! She deserves to have communication anywhere she goes! #AAC #talk2me #smartbox #nonspeakingdoesnotequalnonthinking #HIE #CP #CVI #hypoxicischemicencephalopathy #CerebralPalsy #cordicalvisualimpairment #adaptive #disabledparenting #medicalmama #medicallycomplex
