Today, Punch learned how to run on his two feet for the first time, an exciting little milestone that shows just how much he is growing. He is learning this behavior by mimicking his human caregiver, carefully watching him and trying to copy what he does. Over time, Punch has begun to look at his caregiver as a role model, following his movements and habits with curiosity and trust. Because of this close bond, many of Punch’s behaviors appear surprisingly human-like, something that can sometimes happen with macaques who are raised closely alongside people. Punch is a baby Japanese macaque, also known as a snow monkey, whose mother abandoned him shortly after birth. Without his mother’s care, he was taken in and lovingly raised by his human caretaker. During those early days, when he needed comfort and warmth the most, Punch formed a deep attachment not only to his caregiver but also to a plush orangutan that became his little source of security. Together, they helped him feel safe, loved, and never alone as he grew stronger and began discovering the world around him. Snow monkeys at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park in Nagano prefecture are protected from being culled. Look at this video. They don't run away from us no matter how closely we take a video of them. This is because snow monkeys at Jigokudani are loved, treated well and conserved by people so that they are not aftaid of us. Meanwhile, snow monkeys are often hated and chased away by people in other areas in Nagano prefecture because some snow monkeys damage crops. So it is almost impossible to take this kind of video outside of the area of Jigokudani. As a local farmer who loves snow monkeys, it is very stressful to see snow monkeys being culled in the countryside. It is also very stressful for me to talk to local people who detests snow monkeys. But this stress is inevitable if you live in the very countryside. That's why I love visiting Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park once in a while. Seeing snow monkeys loved by tourists destresses me a lot. #snowmonkey #japanesemacaque #jigokudani #snowmonkeypark #地獄谷野猿公苑

Punch, a young Japanese macaque, also known as a snow monkey, was abandoned by his mother and grew up without the comfort and guidance young monkeys usually receive. To cope, he found comfort in an orangutan plushie, often clinging to it the way an infant would hold onto its mother. Because he missed those early lessons in social behaviour, Punch sometimes gets a little too excited when spending time with the group, especially when hugging his friends, and his hugs can be a bit clumsy since he never really learned how to do it properly. Even so, with time, patience, and the support of his companions, Punch is slowly learning. Little by little, he is becoming more comfortable around others and improving his social skills. The Japanese macaque, commonly known as the snow monkey, is native to Japan and is famous for living in cold, mountainous regions. These intelligent and highly social primates are known for their thick fur, red faces, and remarkable ability to survive snowy winters, often bathing in natural hot springs to stay warm. Snow monkeys are omnivores, eating fruits, seeds, insects, and occasionally small animals. In this video, a baby snow monkey is seen carefully holding and eating a strawberry. Young macaques learn feeding behaviours by observing their mothers and other members of the troop. The strawberry provides natural sugars and nutrients, and the baby’s curious, gentle movements highlight both its developing motor skills and the strong nurturing environment within the group. Thank you very much for following me this year! This is my last post for this year, and I won't post anything for next few days. These are some of my most viewed reels of 2025. Although all of these videos were taken at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, I spent more times outside of Jigokudani, specifically in the mountains in my hometown, Azumino, Nagano prefecture. Instead of taking good photos and videos of wild Japanese macaques like I did last year, I've been focusing on conserving macaques this year. Therefore, there are fewer people who reached my account this year. Outside of the touristy places like Jigokudani, monkeys are being treated very bady because some monkeys come down from the mountains damaging people's properties. My turning points this year were when I found a baby monkey in a trap as well as when AP asked me if they could cover how monkeys are being treated badly outside of the touristy places. These turning points gave me a lot of chances to meet new people like primatologists as well as those who want to work on coexisting with monkeys. Next year, I will spend more and more time with these people to conserve monkeys. I hope you will keep following me and won't get bored by my posts next year! Have a happy new year! #japanesemacaques #snowmonkey

The viral story you're referring to is about **Punch** (or Punch-kun / パンチくん), a baby Japanese macaque (snow monkey) at **Ichikawa City Zoo** (Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Gardens) in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Punch was born in July 2025 but was rejected and abandoned by his mother shortly after birth (likely due to a difficult delivery or other natural reasons common in macaques). Zookeepers hand-raised him for the first several months to ensure his survival. When they gradually reintroduced him to the troop enclosure, he struggled to integrate socially—he was often pushed away, "bullied," scolded, or even dragged by adult monkeys (including protective mothers defending their own young). This led to viral videos showing him looking lonely and vulnerable. To provide comfort and emotional support during this adjustment, the zoo gave him a large plush orangutan toy (from IKEA, often called his "substitute mom" or "Ora-mama"). Punch bonded deeply with it—he dragged it around, cuddled it, slept with it, and clung to it for security. Videos and photos of this adorable yet heartbreaking attachment exploded online in early 2026, racking up millions of views on platforms like TikTok, X, Instagram, and YouTube. Hashtags like #HangInTherePunch trended, and people worldwide cheered him on, drawing parallels to themes of rejection, resilience, and found comfort. The zoo explained that the rough interactions (like dragging or pushing) were mostly normal macaque socialization/scolding behavior—not serious aggression—and part of him learning his place in the troop. Despite initial concerns from fans, recent updates show positive progress: Punch has started making real friends, including grooming sessions, hugs, piggyback rides with other monkeys (like a young female named Moe), and better integration. Crowds have flocked to the zoo to see him, turning him into a full-blown internet celebrity. His story has sparked discussions about animal welfare in zoos, primate behavior, and even emotional lessons for humans about rejection and belonging. (These show Punch with his plush orangutan toy and interacting with the troop—heart-melting stuff!) It's a wholesome (if initi

Video by @joelsartore | Gigi, a two-week-old snow monkey, clings to one of her favorite stuffed animals @blankparkzoo. When Gigi was born, her mom did a great job holding and caring for the baby but would not allow her to nurse. As a result, keepers had to step in and bottle-feed Gigi until she was strong enough to be reunited with her mom. Stuffed toys are often used by zookeepers caring for young primates to keep the infants from imprinting on humans. In doing so, they can ensure that babies like Gigi are successfully adopted by the rest of the troop once they are ready for reintroduction.
