Sofia Coppola’s new book ‘The Virgin Suicides’ has just launched! For her first feature film, ‘The Virgin Suicides’, Sofia Coppola commissioned British fashion photographer Corinne Day to join her on set. Renowned for her unadorned, grungy photographs of iconic models of the 1990s, Day’s representation of female beauty met its match in Coppola, whose debut marked the first of her unaffected, empathetic depictions of womanhood. Edited from Day’s original negatives, this volume, which launches alongside ‘The Virgin Suicides’’ twenty-fifth anniversary, gives mesmerising and unprecedented insight into Coppola’s enigmatic staging of the Lisbon sisters and their suburban trappings. In Day’s photographs, the lush mystique of Coppola’s set runs through images of the young actors at work and between takes, their candid posturing and pensive expressions reflecting the intimate and collaborative environment of the shoot. Fragments of the set and costume design appear suggestively – crucifixes, pink lace bras, homecoming dresses, beauty products, and toffee apples – all playing their part in Coppola’s depiction of the yearning and repression of adolescence. Ed è proprio questa intesa a fare da filo conduttore al primo documentario dedicato al designer newyorkese, che segna anche il debutto della regista premio Oscar nel genere documentaristico. Marc by Sofia, presentato fuori concorso all’82ª edizione del Festival di Venezia, è un doppio esordio dal sapore speciale, destinato a celebrare una carriera, quella di Marc Jacobs, capace di rivoluzionare la moda mescolando lusso e cultura pop, che meritava di essere raccontata. Ma anche un legame iconico, in cui l’uno è musa dell’altra, e viceversa. Un legame ancora più evidente sul red carpet dedicato al documentario, dove Sofia Coppola e Marc Jacobs hanno dimostrato come la loro influenza sappia abbracciare cinema e moda. Il designer ha scelto un look total black, composto da blazer, maglia con scollo a V e leather pants oversize, completato da ballerine classiche nere, un romantico fiocco tra i capelli e le sue ormai iconiche unghie lunghissime e decorate. La regista, invece, ha incantato con un abito di Marc Jacobs lungo dalla vita segnata, impreziosito da un effetto in pizzo stampato. And it is precisely this bond that serves as the common thread in the first documentary dedicated to the designer, Marc by Sofia, which also marks the Academy Award–winning director’s debut in the genre. The designer opted for a total black look, consisting of a blazer, V-neck sweater, and oversized leather pants, completed with classic black ballet flats, a romantic bow in his hair, and his now-iconic long, decorated nails.
