How to purchase black beans at the store: Choose from either dry beans, which will need to be soaked and cooked for a long time, or canned beans. When choosing canned beans, look for no salt added options or low sodium, less than 100mg per serving. If you cannot find lower sodium canned beans, rinse them really well before using in a recipe. How to prepare black beans: For dry beans, sort through to remove any debris and then soak 1 pound of beans in a large pot with enough water to cover beans at least 3” inches overnight, at least 8 hours. Then drain and replace with fresh water again covering soaked beans with at least 3” of water. Bring to a boil then simmer on low for 45-60 minutes or until beans are soft. For canned beans, drain and rinse then add to a saucepan with 2 cups of liquid of choice (water or low-sodium stock), bring to a boil then simmer for 15-20 minutes or until beans are soft. How to serve black beans to baby: From 6-9 months, mash cooked beans into a paste or blend with liquid of choice to create a puree. After 9+ months and when baby develops their pincer grasp, you can flattened soft cooked beans and let baby pick them up one by one. Beans don’t have to cause gas — sometimes it’s just about how we cook them. Growing up, beans were always on the stove in my mom’s kitchen. Now most days I use canned beans (because mom life 😅), but when I have time, I make them from scratch. Here’s my simple stovetop black bean method: 🫘 Soak beans overnight or quick soak (boil 1–2 minutes, let sit covered 1–2 hours, then drain and cook in fresh water) 🧅 Cook with ½ onion, 3 cloves of garlic, and a bay leaf 🧂 Once tender, add 1 tablespoon of salt or to taste + sazón to taste My Nutrition con Sazón DIY sazón (≈ 1¼ tsp): • 1/4 tsp garlic powder • 1/4 tsp cumin • 1/4 tsp coriander • 1/4 tsp achiote powder (or 1/8 tsp turmeric + 1/8 tsp paprika) • 1/4 tsp salt or to taste Simple ingredients. I’m finally sharing my family black beans recipe! We love these with breakfast lunch and dinner depending on what we are eating. But black beans and eggs are a staple in Guatemala and it’s what we do here a lot too. My kids love when I leave jars of beans ready in the fridge cause they can just warm a portion up and eat them with bread. Soooo good! I also fed this to them when they started to eat food as babies. 🫘 1 bag of black beans 24 oz washed 1 whole onion cut in quarters 3 garlic cloves minced 2 tablespoons of salt 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 boxes of chicken stock or 1 box plus 4 cups of water 🫒 Cook on high in a pressure cooker 55 minutes or until fully cooked 🧂 Transfer to a blender and blend until smooth 🧑‍🍳 From here you should only fry what you are going to eat. The rest I like to put in mason jars and freeze for a later date. 🔥 Heat a pan for 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once hot add the black beans and dehydrate as much as you want. You’ll figure out the texture you like the more you make it. Salt once more to taste! 👅 Enjoy with eggs, on bread or tortilla, as a side dish with almost any meal!
