Dead Boys performing “Sonic Reducer” Live at the CBGB’s in 1977 The Dead Boys mattered because they took punk’s promise of danger and actually delivered it. By the time punk began spreading from New York and London in the mid ’70s, a lot of bands were already shaping it into something more theatrical or stylized. The Dead Boys stripped that away. What they brought to the table was a raw belief that the music might fall apart at any moment, and that the people making it didn’t care if it did. Their debut album Young, Loud and Snotty captured that perfectly. Recorded in 1977 and produced by Genya Ravan, the record sounds reckless on purpose. The guitars are abrasive, the drums feel like they’re always about to outrun the beat, and Stiv Bators sings like someone who’d rather provoke you than impress you. Songs like “Sonic Reducer” weren’t polished punk anthems; they were declarations of alienation delivered with zero restraint. What made the Dead Boys important was their attitude. They carried the Cleveland underground scene’s frustration straight into the heart of CBGB’s New York punk explosion and pushed the energy to an even uglier extreme. Their performances were chaotic, confrontational, and often self-destructive, reinforcing the idea that punk wasn’t just a sound. It was a state of mind. That spirit ended up shaping generations of bands. Hardcore punk, garage revival groups, and even later alternative rock acts borrowed from the Dead Boys’ refusal to clean things up or make the music comfortable. In a scene that was already loud and rebellious, the Dead Boys reminded everyone what punk was supposed to feel like: dangerous, unfiltered, and impossible to tame. #Music #DeadBoys

Stiv Bators – who died 34 years ago today –  embodied the live-fast-die-young-and-leave-a-good-looking-corpse ethos. The Dead Boys singer was provocative, outrageous, confrontational. He “windsurfed” on cars as they sped down streets. He dropped his pants to moon and shock strangers. He wrapped mic cords around his neck to “hang” himself on stage.  But Stiv Bators was charming, whether he was down-and-out and living in his car in Cleveland or the toast of NYC. Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome: “He was funny, super smart and a good guy, like a brother to me — even apart from the band, he was just fun to hang out with.” Bators – who died after getting hit by a car in Paris; June 4, 1990 – moved from Youngtown to Cleveland to “make it” in a band. The Dead Boys got their first shot at NYC when Bators and Chrome befriended Joey Ramone at a Ramones gig in Youngstown – and he proceeded to book them a show at CBGB. The band broke up in 1980 after releasing two albums (including one of punk’s greatest discs; “Young Loud and Snotty”).  Bators shifted gears after the Dead Boys: recording a stellar power-pop solo disc, appearing in John Waters’ “Polyester” and forming Lords of the New Church with members of the Damned, Sham 69 and the Barricudas.  Bators’ outrageousness almost did him in when the “hanging” stunt went awry, resulting in him being “dead” for several minutes before waking up. He never woke up after getting hit by a car in Paris. Bators brushed off going to a hospital and, instead, went to sleep – and died from a traumatic brain injury. He was 40. GOLFERS BEWARE!  Canberra rockers @sonicreducer.band tear up the driving range in this week’s Feature Video, ‘BEND’. Directed by @isaacbrown__ , a multi-time rage Feature Video alumnus (with the likes of Lime Cordiale and Kirin J Callinan), ‘BEND’ shows that there’s seemingly no level of perfectly manicured grass or argyle knit that could outshine Sonic Reducer’s cool aura, especially when paired with a rogue golf buggy.  “It’s pretty easy to make the four coolest people you’ve ever seen look good” says Isaac, before adding that filming the video was not without its risks. “Watching (Sonic Reducer vocalist) Cormac drive for the very first time was a gentle reminder that life is short and golf carts are surprisingly fast... Cormac had never driven anything before. Like, ever. So we gave him the keys to a golf cart and told him to give it a crack. First take, he floors it straight toward a sand trap. No one really knew how to stop it, including him. Total chaos. After that, we quietly swapped drivers — but the footage of Cormac behind the wheel may or may not be making its way to socials soon.” « Looking at the footage the band all looks terrified” confirms Cormac. “Which was fair because I don’t have my license and have never driven before. I almost crashed it pretty quick after. » « It felt quite bizarre filming at a golf course, we had all of these old golfers who we’d imagine would be very disapproving of what we were doing” adds drummer Lachie Grinbergs. “I think we have a bit of a stereotype in our head of how golfers act, but they were super friendly, giving us waves and all being very curious about what we were filming. » Chaos aside, BEND marks a conscious shift in tone for Sonic Reducer as they continue to develop their style and sound. « A lot of the BEND video is an excuse to terrorise golfers for a day, but it was also an homage to the Britpop and indie rock bands that inspired the song” explains bassist Louie. “It’s definitely a bit of a stylistic shift for us musically and we really wanted the video to lean into that. »

PEARL JAM - Sonic Reducer (Dead Boys) - Live at the SJSU Event Centre, San Jose, California, October 30th, 1993. Pearl Jam has frequently covered "Sonic Reducer" by The Dead Boys over the years, and it's easy to see how The Dead Boys, with their aggressive, raw energy and punk rock foundations, paved the way and influenced '90s bands like Pearl Jam.
