Tirunelveli Sothi🧡 Sothi is the famous dish in Tirunelveli region made during special occasions. It’s a mild yet flavorful dish made with coconut milk. All time fav🥰 Ingredients Moong dal 1 cup Coconut - 3 Vegetables - Drumstick, carrot, green beans, Potato, Brinjal Ginger extract 2 tbsp Lemon juice 1 tbsp To grind Big onion - half of it Jeera - 1 tsp Garlic -4 pods Ginger - fine chopped pieces 1tbsp Green chillies - 2 Grind these all to a fine paste. For seasoning Shallots 8-10 Green chilli -1 Garlic.-4 pods Curry leaves To make coconut milk In this recipe, i used 3 whole coconuts. Take the shredded coconut, add some hot water and grind it to a fine paste. Transfer the coconut paste to a strainer and extract the coconut milk This will be the first pressed coconut milk. Transfer the extracted shredded coconut to the mixy jar, add some hot water and grind it. Transfer this coconut paste to a strainer and extract the coconut milk again. This will be the second pressed coconut milk. To make sothi * Cook the moong dal. * Cook the vegetables in a pan. *  Add half of the second pressed coconut milk to the cooked vegetables and mix. * Add the cooked dal. * Then add the grinded paste and give a good stir. * Make sure that the flame is low during this whole process. * Now add thw remaining of the second pressed coconut milk. * Add turmeric powder & Salt according to taste. * Do seasoning - Add coconut oil in a pan and fry Jeera, mustard seeds, urad dal, shallots, garlic, green chillies and curry leaves. * Add it to the sothi. * Now add the first pressed coconut milk to the pan and mix all gently. * Leave the sothi on stove for 2 mins (low flame) and give gentle stir. * Now remove the pan from stove and rest the sothi for few mins. *  Add the ginger extract and lemon juice one after the other and give a good stir. * Finally garnish it with coriander leaves. Note: * Only the vegetables and dal gets cooked in medium/high flame. * Stove flame should stay only in LOW once we started adding coconut milk

Sediakan periuk, masukkan kesemua bahan kecuali santan pekat, limau nipis dan garam. 2. Kacau sebati kemudian buka api, tutup periuk dan biarkan ia mendidih 3. Bila dah mendidih, masukkan santan pekat dan garam. Perlahankan api dan biarkan ia reneh. 4. Akhir sekali, masukkan perahan limau nipis, tutup api dan kacau sebati. Adjust rasa dan sedia untuk dihidang bersama putu mayong. Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Servings: 3 pax Recipe Ingredients: 150g tomatoes (cut into small pieces) ½ tsp turmeric powder ¼ tsp fenugreek 1 onion (sliced) 1 curry leaves 3-4 green chilies (halved) ½ lime juice 350ml liquid coconut milk 200ml thick coconut milk Salt as needed Cooking method: 1. Prepare a pot, add all ingredients except thick coconut milk, lime juice and salt. 2. Stir well then turn on the heat, cover the pot and let it boil. 3. When it boils, add thick coconut milk and salt. Turn slow heat and let it simmer. 4. Lastly, add the lime juice, turn off the heat and stir well. Adjust the taste and ready to serve with putu mayong.

Sothi is everyone’s favourite in this house… And we make it once a week so I got to constantly find ways to switch it up while keeping the sothi base the same. Also, I don’t have time to make so many separate dishes. Long beans Sothi - Coconut oil Mustard seeds: 1 tsp Funegreek: 1/2 tsp Onion: 1 Garlic paste: 1/2 tsp Tomato: 1 Salt: 1 tsp Turmeric: 1/2 tsp Tamarind paste: 1/2 tsp Cumin powder: 1/2 tsp Water: 200ml Milk/santan: 200ml Red chili: 1 Curry leaves: a handful Long beans: a handful of Make sure to cook the tomatoes until they’re mushy for a nice thick texture to the sothi. The long beans needs to be covered and cooked for about 15-20 mins. I used medium-low flame so the beans get cooked without reducing the gravy too much. I usually keep my gravy non-spicy so the little man can enjoy it too... I add the chilies only at the end basically for a touch of colour and photography purposes. If you like yours spicy, add the chili or chili padi in the beginning together with the onions etc. Of course you should probably use santan… but I’ve been using milk in my sothi and we love it this way. #controversial Whatever you do in life, don’t let it boil once you add the milk/coconut milk. Make sure it’s on low flame and switch it off before it boils ok. I have so many versions of sothi on my page - fish sothi, murungakkai sothi, prawn sothi, boiled egg etc. Let me know if you’d like me to send it to you.

Mum’s Sothi with mustard leaves recipe: ⬇️🥥 “Sothi is a non-spicy mild coconut gravy/curry. It’s usually eaten with string hoppers/idiyappam or rice.” 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp fenugreek seeds 1 onion sliced 1/4 inch ginger sliced 1 tomato sliced 4-5 cloves of garlic sliced 1 green or red chilli slit 1/4 kilo sawi/mustard leaves Few curry leaves 1/2 tsp turmeric powder/kunyit Coriander leaves 4-5 small limau kasturi Salt to taste 1/2 cups santan 1/4 cup water 1. Heat oil, add in mustard and fenugreek seeds. 2. Add in all the sliced ingredients: onion, garlic, tomato, ginger, chilli, and salt. Stir till fragrant 3. Then, put in the chopped sawi/mustard leaves. Cook for about few minutes. 4. Next, add the turmeric powder. Stir well. Then add in the santan and water. Make sure the santan doesn’t overboil. Gentle boiling should be enough. 5. Lastly, add in the coriander and curry leaves. 6. When the gravy starts to boil, turn off the heat. While cooking, you need to stir as well. 3 Adjust taste and ready to serve.

If you’re wondering what I mean when I say “really good coconut milk” DM me for a link to a discussion about the various coconut milk options out there, and how the difference can have a huge impact on your cooking. Also, when I say turn off your stove at the first whisp of steam, that’s a really important thing! This is because in the East, we would never disrespect coconut milk cook by letting it cook to a boiling point. My kids love Sothi ( Indian mild coconut curry ) , and they love fried fish , guess what ? This dish is the combination of both, how genius is that? I love that it requires simple ingredients and not time consuming at all. The dish is non spicy and bland , perfect for kids , however for grownups of course we had this dish with sambal ( there is always sambal in my fridge 😬) and omg it was superb, finger licking good!
