Are you ever worried about your baby’s spit up? Worried that it’s a lot of spit up? Worried that they’ve got reflux or digestive issues? It can be concerning when your baby is constantly spitting up. There are generally two types of spitters: 1️⃣There’s the Happy Spitter, which is where baby spits up, but their weight gain and output is great, they’re happy and not in pain and it’s more of a laundry and social problem than a medical problem. My babies are a perfect example of a happy spitter. There’s been many times it has seemed like an excessive amount, but they’re smiling the entire time. 2️⃣Then there’s reflux/silent reflux or GERD, which is a medical problem and can affect baby’s demeanor, weight, output, and will often need medical intervention. It’s typically a SYMPTOM so you still want to get to the root of why this is - oral restriction, food sensitivity? ▶️This post is about the Happy Spitter because I get this question almost all the time in my BF consults Babies spit up. It’s very common. They’ve got immature digestive tracts that allows the milk in their stomachs to come back up. Spit up also happens if mom has an abundant milk supply and baby takes in more than they can handle and ends up spitting it up. Some tips are to keep burp cloths near by at all times, have bibs available, and keep your baby upright (but even then they will still spit up 😫) So if your baby is gaining weight, happy demeanor, does not appear in pain, good output, and spits up - that’s okay, no need to give supplements or medication! It’s when they’re in pain, and losing weight that you’d want to seek medical intervention. (Spit up can sometimes be related to tongue tie but you would often see other issues related to tongue tie besides *just* spit up - see an IBCLC lactation consultant 🙋‍♀️for an assessment) Was your baby a happy spitter?

There’s a big difference between a happy spitter and a baby with reflux: Happy spitters: - Spit up often but seem content - Gain weight well - Don’t act distressed during or after feeds Usually no treatment needed — it’s messy, but normal! Reflux babies: - Show signs of discomfort or pain - Arch their back or cry during feeds - May refuse to eat or have slow weight gain - May wake frequently or scream after laying down If your baby is spitting up and seems uncomfortable, it’s worth talking to your pediatrician AND a lactation consultant.
