A massive new species of stick insect has been discovered in Australia, with researchers calling it a contender for the nation’s heaviest insect. Weighing 44 grams, the winged creature was found in the high-altitude rainforests of northern Queensland by a team led by James Cook University researcher Angus Emmott. The insect, named Acrophylla alta, remained undiscovered due to its remote, difficult-to-access habitat high in the forest canopy. Two specimens are now part of the collection at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane.

Springtails like to eat decaying matter & things such as mould, bacteria & fungi which could be harmful to the fine balance of a terrarium. They then process this food & fertilise the soil which in turn will make valuable nutrients available to the plants inside the terrarium🌿 Springtails are also able to self regulate their population, if there is a overload in food they will increase in numbers & if there is a shortage their numbers will fall. This means a terrarium will not be ‘completely overrun’ by springtails but instead, a small world for them to live in. They belong to a group called Collembola, separate from insects, even though they have six legs. They don’t grow wings, don’t go through metamorphosis, and have their own unique anatomy. They live in soil, leaf litter, and damp places, feeding on fungi and decaying plant matter, making them essential for healthy soil. When conditions are right, thousands can gather like this. Their colors can range from white to yellow to pink or purple, depending on the species. And if disturbed, they can launch themselves into the air using a built-in spring mechanism called a furcula - hence the name springtail. They don’t bite. They don’t harm people. And without them, soil health would collapse. Tiny creatures.
