Here’s the ingredients in the sandwich PLUS the total fiber and protein (approximately) 🥪2 Slices Squirrelly Bread - 8g fiber, 11g protein 🥪1/2 tablespoon mayo 🥪1/2 tablespoon mustard (approx) 🥪5 Slices deli turkey - 15g protein 🥪1 slice cheddar cheese - 7g protein 🥪3 tomato slices - 0.7g fiber 🥪1 lettuce leaf 🥪 pinch of salt 🥪1 mini cucumber sliced on the side - 0.3g fiber . My family loves bread, and as a registered dietitian and a mom, I want to ensure I provide healthy options for my kids and myself. I have been buying Silver Hills Bakery bread for a while and I love that it is a nutritious option and tastes great. What are the benefits of sprouted grains? The nutrients in sprouted grains are easier for your body to use. Sprouting breaks down antinutrients (one in particular called phytic acid which binds minerals so we can’t absorb them as well) which unlocks iron, magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins. So, the nutrients in sprouted grains are more available for our body to use compared to unsprouted grains. Sprouted grains are easier to digest. As a new plant starts to draw on the protein and starches stored in a seed, it uses enzymes to break these down into amino acids and simpler carbohydrates to fuel its growth. This makes sprouted whole grains and seeds easier to digest for people. Sprouted whole grains provide us with energy, fibre, vitamins, and minerals. In contrast to refined carbohydrates, where you might feel a bit of a crash or tired shortly after eating them, whole grains offer a steady release of carbohydrates to help fuel your day. I made toast with almond butter, sliced pears, raisins, and slivered almonds. It is super delicious, high in fibre (two slices of the Squirrelly bread have 8g of fibre plus the pears and almond butter add more!), and completely plant-based. Grab the pre-cut veggies and the bagged coleslaw mix. It doesn’t matttterrrr. (AD) If there is any point in all of these what I eat in a day videos, it’s getting inspiration for adding new foods or recipes to your life to help you bust ruts and love what you eat, minus the icky diet culture stuff. And we ALL know we need to eat more fibre…we need 25 - 38 grams daily depending on our energy needs but the secret to making it easy is to load in a few fibre allstars into your day, like @silverhillsbakery sprouted grain breads. Each slice of Squirrelly bread contains 4 grams of fibre, making it a fibre-rich swap for your usual slice. Here are some other amazing fibre helpers to help you hit your goals! 🫐 Berries: cherries and blueberries are actually a “lower fibre” berry, with 4 grams per cup. Raspberries and blackberries are loaded: 8 grams per cup! Hear that, summer? Bring on the berries! 🌱 Ground flax and chia seeds: ground flax has 2 grams of fibre per tablespoon and whole chia has almost 4 grams of fibre per tablespoon! 🥜 Nuts: peanuts and pistachios have about 3 grams per ¼ cup, while almonds have almost 5 🌱 Legumes: it varies from 4 grams per ½ cup for chickpeas to a whopping 8 grams for black beans 🥑 Avocado: like I said.. 6.5 grams of fibre in ½ a medium fruit I’ve got a whole blog with 25 high fibre foods to help you power up but PSA: you need to add fibre to your diet SLOWLY to give your body time to adjust. And the answer: “Not often.” Bread used to be a staple in Erin’s life and now, she has it once every few months, as a treat or on an occasion. The reason? North American, store-bought bread, tends to cause most people (including Erin) bloat and gut inflammation. Erin tries to apply the logic: • If it comes in a box or a bag, find a better alternative • Keep bread in the “eat some” category (i.e. eat it sparingly) • If it didn’t exist 100 years ago (like our beloved Squirrelly Bread 😉), find something that did • Stick to 1 ingredient foods (whole foods) If it has a nutritional label, find an alternative Carbs Erin would eat in its place: • Potatoes 🥔 • Rice 🍚 • Yams 🍠 • Fruit🍍🍌🫐 • Vegetables 🥕🥦🍅 • Quinoa • Oats Once Erin removed bread from her diet, she noticed bloat going down, less indigestion, the scale moved more quickly, her skin improved, and she felt “lighter”.
