JAWitness the construction of what is believed to be the strongest of all known insect cocoons - made by none other than the denki mushi slug caterpillar, Monema flavescens! 🐛⚡️🥚
The cocooning process begins when a final instar denki mushi caterpillar finishes feeding, and seeks out a spot to begin construction. These slug caterpillars are quite particular, only choosing to build their cocoons within the junctions between branches.
Once a suitable spot is found, the denki mushi uses its mandibles to strip bark from the branches, and then lays a pad of silk atop the peeled area. With this foundation in place, the caterpillar proceeds to spin silk around itself for the next two hours or so until it is encased in a soft, oval net of silk.
About halfway through the cocooning process, the denki mushi begins excreting a chalky white liquid that it’s been stockpiling inside its malpighian tubules (insect kidneys). This substance is calcium oxalate monohydrate, and it rapidly combines with the soft silk cocoon to crystallize it into an impressively durable structure.
It’s still not definitively understood how the characteristic stripes of the denki mush cocoon are formed, but I believe they are the product of the rhythmically elliptical movements made by the caterpillar as it paints calcium around its cocoon. Given that there is so much variation between the patterns of different cocoons, it’s clear that each denki mushi has its own artistic touch!
The cocooning process showcased here took about seven hours total - this video is at nearly 500x speed! During the long recording process, a brief power outage corrupted one of the video files. Given my limited knowledge of uncorrupting MP4s, that took an additional two hours 😅
Most of the information I’ve gathered about the cocooning process of Monema flavescens comes from a paper titled “Insights into the structure and composition of mineralized hard cocoons constructed by the oriental moth” (Qin et al. 2022), which I recommend reading if you want more information on the incredible biochemical composition of these cocoons - truly remarkable feats of caterpillar engineering!

So no, love isn’t a choice, but everything we do with it, that is our decision.
