Your shop might be at the wrong humidity… even when your hygrometer says 45%. When I first started building instruments, the common wisdom was simple: Keep your shop at 45% relative humidity all year long. After building for a while, I realized the advice everyone repeated like gospel wasn’t entirely accurate. The famous 45% target assumes a shop temperature of 75°F (23.9°C). At that temperature, 45% RH equals an absolute humidity of about 9.7 g/m³. That moisture content is the real target. But here’s the catch. As temperature changes, the amount of moisture air can hold changes too. Warm air holds more moisture. Cooler air holds less. So if your shop is: 🎸 70°F (21°C) → you need about 53% RH to reach the same moisture content 🎸 80°F (27°C) → you only need about 39% RH Same wood stability. Different RH numbers. The last thing you want to do when you walk into the shop is start calculating humidity tables. Now I believe this tool was designed for tele but I’ve been able to use it on a bunch of other stuff, including this music master.
