The Setup • Sit on your mat and bring one leg forward, bending it so your knee is pointing outward and your foot is tucked toward your groin. • Extend the other leg straight back behind you. • Keep your hips square: Try to keep your pelvis level rather than leaning heavily onto one hip. 2. The Movement • Place your hands behind your head with elbows wide. • Engage your core to protect your lower back. • Slowly lean your torso toward the side of the bent front leg, then oscillate back toward the center or the other side as shown in the video. • Move with control; do not bounce or use momentum. 3. Benefits • Reduces Nerve Compression: Helps create space around the sciatic nerve where it passes through the hip. • Improves Mobility: Increases the range of motion in the hip joint. • Relieves Lower Back Tension: The side-bending motion stretches the muscles that connect the pelvis to the spine. Many standard stretching exercises are not designed for those with herniated discs or sciatica. They often move the body in ways that increase strain on the spine and discs. Why does this matter? Because improper stretching can actually exacerbate your pain instead of alleviating it. Here’s what you can do about it: Focus on mobility routines that improve your functional movements (like squats as an example). Avoid stretches that pull on your spine (even if this feels good in the short term). Listen to your body and adjust the intensity to avoid pain. These 6 exercises help: – improve mobility – reduce tension – take pressure off the lower back 1. Sphinx → Back Extension Promotes spinal extension and helps reduce pressure on the lumbar discs. Especially useful if you spend a lot of time sitting or in flexed positions. 2. Cat → Flat Back Improves spinal mobility and control while increasing blood flow to the lower back. Great for reducing stiffness and improving posture awareness. 3. Progressive Knees to Chest Creates a gentle decompression of the spine and relaxes the lower back muscles. Helps release accumulated tension in the lumbar area. 4. Elevated Pigeon + Head Movement Targets the glutes and hip rotators, which are often linked to sciatic pain. Releasing the hips can significantly reduce stress on the lower back. 5. Standing Back Extension Restores the natural extension of the spine, often lost from prolonged sitting. Helps counteract compression and improve overall posture. 6. Active Child’s Pose Gently stretches the entire back and promotes muscle relaxation and recovery.
