Have you unlocked all 3 levels of your flexibility? It is taught that in order to get flexible, we have to stretch. But by solely using this Level 1 approach of passive stretching, we only help our bodies gain range, but not control. In order to build functional flexibility, we need to train a variety of techniques from passive stretching, active strengthening & dynamic mobility drills. If I had to relearn the splits from scratch, this is exactly how I would do it. First, I would stop chasing the stretch and start building strength. Start every session with a deep horse stance. This loads the adductors in a lengthened position. Research shows that strength training at long muscle lengths improves flexibility and tissue resilience better than passive stretching alone. Master the deep resting squat. If your hips cannot flex and externally rotate here, the splits will feel blocked. Then strengthen the opposing muscle groups, especially the outer quad and glute medius. Flexibility without strength is instability. Strong hips give your nervous system permission to open up. Next, use Cossack hovers. These are active mobility. You are teaching your body to control end range, not just hang out there. After that, add the V sit as a passive stretch. Gradually increase range over weeks and months. Slow breathing helps down regulate the nervous system so the body stops guarding. Mix in tailor’s pose and 90 90 to improve external and internal rotation. Limited femur internal rotation is one of the biggest hidden blockers to clean splits. Eventually, you must practice the split itself. Use a chair, yoga blocks, or your hands for support. Make it safe. Never force it. Studies on flexibility show that long term progress comes from consistent exposure, not aggressive stretching. This is a months to years process. Strength. Control. Patience. That is how you earn the splits.
