We have 61 schools across the Tukituki electorate and I love visiting them all. As a Mum of four, I am passionate about education and improving the future of our kids. Our Government is laser-focused on lifting performance in education so all our kids can reach their full potential. In just two short years, we’ve achieved a huge amount. We’ve banned mobile phones in schools so kids can focus on their learning We’ve also mandated an hour a day of reading, writing and maths. And we’ve made the single biggest investment in learning support in a generation and have rolled out structured literacy and structured maths as well as a whole new curriculum for Maths and English in primary schools. This year we have more bold action planned for secondary schools. Which will leave a legacy of opportunity for future generations. This includes NCEA reform which will create an internationally benchmarked qualification setting our kids up for a lifetime of success

Es notable como en Argentina seguimos debatiendo acerca de cuál es el mejor camino para enseñar a leer y mientras tanto miles de estudiantes no logran aprender a tiempo o quedan semi analfabetos para siempre. Es tanta la resistencia a la enseñanza fonética sistemática que persiste en las instituciones educativas, que algunos defensores promueven un enfoque denominado “alfabetización equilibrada” (balanced literacy). Este enfoque ´EQUILIBRADO´tiene hoy programas en marcha en varias provincias que , tristemente, 😭😭😭siguen sin arrojar buenos resultados. El estudio que les cuento aquí se presentó en 2024 pero se hizo público hace poco. (Structured Literacy Compared to Balanced Literacy: A Meta-Analysis (Hansford et al., 2024) Allí se presenta un meta-análisis de gran escala que compara la eficacia de los enfoques de alfabetización estructurada (structured literacy) y alfabetización equilibrada (balanced literacy) en la enseñanza de la lectura. Este meta-análisis, que revisa 78 estudios, muestra que los enfoques de alfabetización estructurada —basados en enseñanza explícita y sistemática de la fonética— producen mejores resultados en lectura que los enfoques de alfabetización equilibrada. Los efectos son más consistentes y superiores, especialmente en los primeros grados y en el mediano y largo plazo. En cambio, la alfabetización equilibrada presenta resultados más variables y, en estudios longitudinales rigurosos, efectos bajos o nulos. La evidencia refuerza la importancia de una enseñanza planificada, secuenciada y basada en la ciencia de la lectura. Si queremos que todos nuestros estudiantes aprendan a tiempo, necesitamos caminos estructurados, sistemáticos y basados en conciencia fonológica. Morphology, the study of meaningful word parts, helps students understand academic language, and math is full of it. Words like triangle, polygon, perimeter, subtract, and multiple all carry meaning in their structure. When students recognize those parts, they are not just memorizing terms. They are learning how language works. This supports word problems, vocabulary, and overall comprehension, especially for students with dyslexia, struggling readers, and multilingual learners. Math is a language. Making morphemes visible helps students connect what they already know about words to new content. These posters are such a practical way to bring structured literacy into the math classroom. Ideas for using them: ➕️post them near your math wall ➕️refer to them during word problems ➕️have students highlight morphemes in new terms connect to science and social studies vocabulary Grateful to @reachingeveryreader for creating such a fantastic and classroom-ready resource.

You may notice: • Strong effort without meaningful progress • Slow work completion • Frustration or avoidance (especially reading aloud) This isn’t about laziness. It’s about how the brain processes information. Support should be intentional and specific, not generic: ✔️ Audiobooks or text-to-speech ✔️ Extra time for tests and assignments ✔️ Guided notes or pre-written outlines ✔️ Specialized Academic Instruction that is structured and evidence-based (like structured literacy for reading or explicit, step-by-step math instruction) Progress should be monitored regularly. And instruction must match the area of need, not just the classroom setting. Save this as we continue our 13-part IDEA disability series.
