MIStuttering is not caused by being nervous. Trust me, if I could get rid of it I would. It's something I've had since I was a child and I've just had to learn to live with it. This is why I script all of my content (even this video). This is why I practice my scripts more than most hollywood actors. This is why you feel catfished when you meet me in person hahaha. I can make jokes about it now but it's taken me years to get to a point where I feel comfortable making this video. I've talked about my Stutter before and everytime I do I get heaps of messages from people saying how much this helped them. So whilst this video might not show my best angle, I know how important it is to that younger version of myself!!!

JUFunny reel, serious story: I’ve had a stutter ever since I started speaking. It went away at times, but it was there from the beginning. I never went to speech therapy, because my stutter wasn’t a problem. As a child, I stuttered spontaneously and effortlessly. I was aware of my stutters, I felt them coming, but I didn’t try to stop them from happening. There was no reason to, as I didn’t have any negative experiences yet. This changed when I started to get bullied around age 12. Their laughs took the spontaneity out of my stutter, and replaced it with suppression. I started trying to control my speech, as a way to prevent myself from getting bullied. My natural stutter turned into hiding, suppressing, avoiding. Stuttering started to become a huge problem in my life. I was worrying about stuttering all day. As I tried to find help, I noticed that all the speech therapies were focusing on fixing stuttering and speaking fluently. This made me angry. Stuttering was not a problem UNTIL I tried to fix it. It became a problem when I tried to suppress the way I naturally spoke. And all these therapies were offering just that. Even therapies that said stuttering was okay, focused on using speech techniques to speak fluently. Even though I thought about using them, I soon realized I couldn’t use fluency-focused speech techniques without reinforcing the idea that stuttering is wrong. And I was so tired of that.
I understand that many people do not have my experience, and only remember stuttering with struggle. It’s super understandable that you want to get rid of that. However, I don’t think that focusing on fluency is a helpful way out of struggle. I truly believe that you can stutter with less struggle, by learning to embrace it step by step, and by slowly removing all the behaviors of suppressing it. I remember stuttering effortlessly and without worry, so I know it’s possible. (Not saying that you have to, of course.) It’s been so enjoyable to slowly remove the layers of suppression, avoidance, and holding back, to find my spontaneous stutter underneath.
For the first time in my life, I am in speech therapy. And it’s not to find fluency. It’s to get my stutter back.

Every year on the 22nd of October is Stammer Awareness Day, I have had a stammer since I was little but I haven’t really posted it on my social media. Today I wanted to put an end to that and show awareness by posting a video in one continuous clip whether I stutter or not. To everyone with a stammer or any speech impediment, keep smashing your goals and don’t let it affect you, show everyone that you have a stammer and speak with confidence ❤️
