Have you seen Y guard used like this before?
Here @adelefornarino has a strong Achilles grip. As @sophiacassellabjj rotates to free herself from the submission threat, Adele uses a combination of outside ashi and y guard to follow the rotations and threaten the foot lock in all directions (belly down, inside, outside and facing up). What impressed me the most was her ability to maintain pressure on the foot lock. That pressure accumulated each defensive roll until she got the finish.
Key takeaways re using Y guard to follow through defensive rotations:
1. Y guard is an effective control position allowing robust control of primary leg especially during opponents defensive rolls while also maintaining footlock pressure
2. Y guard hook can be extended during the rotation to "catch" the secondary leg thus assisting in the following opponents defensive roll
3. Can be used preemptively before a defensive roll knees to invert prior to opponents defensive roll. This means it's more likely that to "out rotate" the defensive roll because your lower body (leg configuration) has had a head start.
4. Easy to transition from outside ashi and Y guard and vice versa. A viable option for holding a leg entanglement for a meaningful amount of time (as long as there's an Achilles grip to stop back takes)
Ive seen Y guard taught in the context of a standing opponent where it's used to create a forward off balance and transitions into X guard but not in the context of using it in a double seated position as an intermediary form of control to follow and finish the foot lock.
