CHSubstituting dominant chords or adding in dominant chords is a great way to start reharmonizing tunes.
By now you may have heard of a tritone substitution or a backdoor dominant, but in this video I'll talk about another dominant chord substitution that's not as mainstream as the former two.
Another cool thing you can do is add a ii in front of the substituted dominant chord, so then you'll end up with a tritone ii-V or a backdoor ii-V - this creates even more harmonic momentum.
And as always, remember to apply concepts to tunes as much as you can, because that's the way to transform intellectually understood concepts into actual vocabulary that you can use.

World Cup 2014. Salvador, Brazil. Quarter-final: Netherlands against Costa Rica at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova.
The stadium was buzzing with tension. For 120 minutes the Netherlands attacked, created chances, and hit the post multiple times. Costa Rica defended with courage and discipline. Time ran out, and everyone knew what was coming: penalties.
On the Dutch bench, Louis van Gaal stayed calm. He had one substitution left. Most expected a striker, but van Gaal had a different plan. He had studied Costa Rica’s penalty takers, watched their habits, and seen something special in Tim Krul, his timing, confidence, and presence in crucial moments. Van Gaal had prepared for this exact scenario.
No manager had ever substituted a goalkeeper only for a penalty shootout in World Cup history. It had never been done. But as the final seconds ticked away, van Gaal made his decision.
The board went up. Jasper Cillessen came off. He didn’t understand. He’d played every minute of the tournament, and now, just before penalties, he was replaced. Anger took over. He kicked bottles, shouted, and wanted to be the hero, not someone watching from the bench.
Krul came on, cold but ready. The stadium was shocked. He made himself large in goal, shouting, pointing, walking toward each penalty taker, trying to get in their heads. He even spoke Dutch to Bryan Ruiz, the Costa Rican captain who had played in the Netherlands before. Ruiz hesitated, caught off guard.
The shootout began. One save came. Then another. Each save louder than the last. When Krul stopped the final penalty from Umana, the Netherlands advanced to the semi-finals. Players ran to him, van Gaal smiled, and even Cillessen couldn’t help but grin. Anger melted into pride. The plan had worked.
It wasn’t just a save. It was preparation, trust, and courage. A moment that became World Cup history.

👀 This is a iii VI ii V turnaround IN C MAJOR 👀
That’s right C! HOW IT WORKS:
STEP ONE : The 3 chord usually E minor 7 is substituted with a Major Six (G major 6)
Barry sees all Minor seventh chords as Major 6 so A-7 would me C6 etc
STEP TWO: Learn all your inversions on the middle 4 strings to start in DROP 2 (a drop 2 is a voicing where 4 consecutive strings are used)
STEP THREE: Barry uses a Minor six chord a half step above a dominant much like when we play Ab melodic minor over G7)
STEP FOUR: learn all your Minor Six chords in DROP 2 on the middle four strings.
STEP FIVE: take all your voicings and invert them.
STEP SIX: FOLLOW THE TABS LEARN THE PROGRESSION!
