### The Geometry of Survival
Sully’s decision to ditch in the water was a calculated risk based on physics. He realized the plane was too low and slow to reach any nearby airport, including Teterboro or LaGuardia. To survive the impact, he had to touch down at a precise speed and angle: the wings had to be perfectly level, and the nose had to be up, but not so high that the tail would break off. He landed at approximately 150 mph. Because the A320 is designed with a "ditching button" that seals the vents in the fuselage, the plane remained buoyant long enough for all 155 people to evacuate onto the wings and life rafts.
### A Community Effort
The rescue was a massive, coordinated effort by New York City’s maritime community. Within minutes of the ditching, commuter ferries, NYPD harbor units, and FDNY boats rushed to the scene. The water temperature was a freezing 36°F (2°C), meaning the passengers were at high risk of hypothermia. The ferry captains skillfully maneuvered their large vessels close to the sinking plane's wings to pull survivors to safety. This event remains a defining moment in aviation, leading to new bird-strike safety regulations and proving that even in the face of a dual-engine failure, elite training and calm decision-making can prevent a tragedy.

📌 Kuzey Carolina’ya gitmek üzere New York LaGuardia Havalimanı’ndan havalanan US Airways’e ait Airbus A320, kalkıştan kısa bir süre sonra kaz sürüsüne girdi. Uçağın her iki motorunda meydana gelen patlamaların ardından yangın çıktı.
📌 Kokpitte, 58 yaşındaki Kaptan Pilot Chesley Sullenberger’e 49 yaşındaki İkinci Pilot Jeffrey Skiles eşlik ediyordu.
⚠️ Nehir yüzeyine ilk olarak uçağın kuyruk bölümü temas etti. Şokun önemli kısmını kuyruk aldı. Sonra kanatlar ve arkasından ön bölüm suya oturdu.
🛬Çarpmayla birlikte uçağın alt gövdesinde yırtılma meydana geldi. Kabin yavaş yavaş su alıyordu.
