Mola alexandrini, also known as the bump-head sunfish, was only recently confirmed as distinct from Mola mola through genetic and morphological research. It’s now recognized as the heaviest bony fish in the world, with individuals weighing over 2,700 kilograms.
These deep-diving fish usually stay far offshore, but in the Galápagos, seasonal upwellings bring colder, nutrient-rich water and with it, the chance to see them at recreational depths. They rise to visit cleaning stations, where smaller fish pick parasites off their thick, rough skin. Many sunfish sightings in the Pacific once thought to be Mola mola are now known to be Mola alexandrini.
Watching one glide past feels like spotting a prehistoric spacecraft in slow motion.
