Beyond this social intelligence, studies have shown that chickens possess remarkable cognitive abilities: they can recognize over 100 individual faces, both of other chickens and humans, and they communicate using a wide repertoire of distinct vocalizations to alert others to specific types of food or the approach of a predator. Furthermore, they demonstrate self-control and an understanding of object permanence—the knowledge that something exists even when it's out of sight—a trait once thought to be limited to higher primates. These traits reveal that the humble chicken is far from a bird-brained simpleton, but a highly adapted and perceptive animal.
