Reggae has lost a giant. 🕊️ Stephen “Cat” Coore, co-founder of the legendary band Third World and one of Jamaica’s most respected musicians, has passed away at age 69. From his early days with Inner Circle to helping create Third World’s signature reggae-fusion sound, Cat Coore’s musical legacy helped carry Jamaican music to the world stage. With timeless classics like Now That We’ve Found Love, 96 Degrees in the Shade and Try Jah Love, his brilliance, creativity and dedication shaped generations of music lovers. Honoured with the Order of Distinction, his contribution to Jamaica’s culture will never be forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his wife Lisa, his children, grandchildren, bandmates, and the global reggae family. Rest in power, Cat Coore. A Tribute to Stephen "Cat" Coore: The Soul of the "Reggae Ambassadors" Today, the strings of Jamaica are a little quieter. With the passing of Stephen "Cat" Coore, we lose more than a guitarist; we lose a visionary who proved that reggae had no boundaries. The Prodigy: From Casals to Kingston Long before he was a cornerstone of the Third World, band Stephen was a child prodigy whose talent defied his years. His foundation was built on the rigorous beauty of classical music. As a young cellist, his mastery was so profound that he was awarded a scholarship named after the legendary Pablo Casals—a testament to a level of skill that was world-class before he had even reached adulthood. The Architect of "Reggae Fusion" When Coore co-founded Third World in 1973,he brought that classical discipline and experimental spirit with him. He was the architect of a sound that blended: Roots Reggae rhythms Classical arrangements Funk and Soul sensibilities He famously integrated the cello into live reggae performances, most notably during his breathtaking solo renditions of "Redemption Song." Seeing Cat on stage, eyes closed, drawing a bow across the strings to create a haunting, soulful reggae melody, was a spiritual experience for fans from Kingston to London to Tokyo. A Legacy of Excellence As a guitarist, his "extraordinaire" title was well-earned. Whether it was the disco-infused groove of "Now That We Found Love" or the conscious depth of "96 Degrees in the Shade," Cat’s playing was always melodic, tasteful, and impeccably timed. He represented the "uptown" sophistication of reggae, proving the genre was as much a scholarly art form as it was a heartbeat of the streets. "Music is a spiritual thing. It’s a gift from the Almighty, and we are just the vessels." — The philosophy Cat lived by.
