If you remember the tick I pulled from my cane toad, here's a good look at it. Most likely a common toad tick from South America, and these little cuties can carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever and flea-borne spotted fever. Yes, I realize it's a tick and not a flea, but most of these pathogenic species have a zoonotic life cycle. They are transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods such as ticks, mites, lice and fleas, which commonly serve as ecological bridges for transmission from wildlife to humans and domestic animals. Cane toads are extremely toxic; if you ate one, you could go into cardiac arrest in 45 minutes, but this little tick doesn't seem fazed. The toxin found inside cane toads was even used by the Choco Indians of Colombia as a weapon. Using bamboo tubes and an open flame, the Choco Indians would “milk” these toads and smear the toxins on the darts of blow darts and arrowheads. But it's not all bad; there is already evidence that properties of the poison will kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. TICKS & hiking. Obviously it’s extremely important to check yourself and pets after being out walking/ hiking for ticks especially in hotspot areas like Kerry. My tick was so small my tick remover wouldn’t even get near it! I know how important it is to check for ticks and remove them carefully, but I had no idea it’s recommended (obviously not forced just recommended) to get tablets and a possible test in 3-4 weeks. 😳 ^* even though I spotted mine within a few hours! This is not to scare anyone at all & don’t let it put you off the outdoors, but if you’re out hiking just check yourself and keep an eye on your skin. They’re easily missed! #ticks #thehikelife
