Mash can be more than just a comfort feed. It can support hydration, appetite, and overall intake when your horse needs a little extra help. And winter is one of those key times. Horses naturally drink less in cold weather. Research shows water intake can drop by 6 to 12 percent, increasing the risk of dehydration and digestive upset. The literature also shows that horses self-regulate intake in mild weather, but feeding a soaked mash during winter can help offset seasonal declines. In cold conditions, horses consuming mash drank equal to or more water than those on dry feed alone. So based off these findings, soaking feed year-round may not always change total intake but in winter it can be a supportive hydration strategy. Any feeding decisions for your horse should take into account the entire picture, such as your forage, other diet components, your horse’s data and history and your climate.
