After a few glasses of wine, Taylor Meier and Evan Westfall recorded "All the Debts I Owe” in front of a fireplace with just a banjo, guitar and Meier’s soft, raspy vocals. At the time, Caamp was brand new, but certain of its chances: “We were sure we were going to win,” Meier admits, laughing. Well, this might be the most uncomfortable I’ve ever felt, yolo… Hi @nprmusic… This year, I took a leap of faith and decided to submit to the NPR Tiny Desk contest. Most of you probably don’t know that I’m an artist; I’ve been creating music privately for years but have always been too shy to share. Whew! STORYTIME. In 2023, I wrote this song & shelved it like the hundreds of others in my phone, journals, etc. Late that year in @yoji_roby ‘s living room, we built a beat around my lyrics and recorded it. I planned to share it February 2024. But as a chronic over-thinker does, I let doubt creep in, getting in my own way all year. As a creative, sometimes sh*t is just weird. I digress… When I heard about the Tiny Desk contest, it just felt right, like it was the right moment - Idk how else to explain it. I knew I was going to be in Minneapolis as the deadline approached, with limited resources and time. The thought of pulling the plug crossed my mind more than once. I didn’t have a place to film, no band to support me, and on top of it all, a family emergency and one of my worst fears happened the night we were supposed to film my submission. But here’s where it gets beautiful. Just two days before filming, I became inspired with this concept and choreography, despite feeling like the odds were stacked against me. Miraculously, everything began to fall into place. My little crew rallied around me, and their unwavering support turned chaos into something magical. In those final moments, when everything felt right, I realized that sometimes, the most beautiful creations emerge from the deepest struggles. I know regardless of the outcome of this contest, doing this was worth it. I needed to learn to LOVE ME OUT LOUD I cannot thank @yoji_roby, @swainstudios, @moh23bama and @studiiyo23 enough for the efforts and sacrifices they made to get this done and to everyone who has encouraged me, who believes in me…. Happy Birthday to my first record, Unwind!! Y’all can finally order it on my webstore and Bandcamp page; I’ve restocked CDs! Website links are in my bio. I self-released Unwind back in 2018. I had no idea where this record would take me… I just wanted to release something that I was proud of and that showed my guitar skills. I entered the Tiny Desk Contest for the first time right before putting this record out… I didn’t win the contest, but was fortunate enough to make an appearance on NPR’s Saturday Edition through Scott Simon inviting me on. I played a couple tunes and chatted with him on the air. He told me about the NPR bump after our interview… and this record went from being unknown to charting in the top 10 on iTunes, Amazon, and even charting on Billboard. I’ll always love Unwind; it symbolizes the beginning of my professional music career and I’m still very proud of it.
