Toronto’s last fatal duel took place at the Northwest corner of Bay and Grosvenor, ironically just steps away from a building that houses the Ontario Police Arbitration Commission. Back then though, the site of this deadly duel was a farmers field. Imagine the scene in March 1817, with two men standing back to back holding pistols at dawn. John Ridout, a Student vs Samuel Jarvis, a filthy rich dude. Ridout missed and Jarvis shot him dead with a bullet to the chest. Think about that moment - duelling to the death in a farmers field, in the middle of downtown Toronto. #MuseumOfToronto #TorontoHistory #TOYouDontKnow #torontostories #torontoevents

Toronto’s history began in 1793 when John Graves Simcoe founded the town of York as the capital of Upper Canada. Initially a small British colonial settlement with a military and administrative role, York grew steadily through the 19th century after being renamed Toronto in 1834. Its economy shifted from fur trade and local commerce to manufacturing and transportation as canals, railways, and its Lake Ontario port connected it to continental markets. By the late 1800s, Toronto had become Canada’s financial center, dominated by banks, insurance firms, food processing, textiles, and machinery. Industrial growth accelerated during and after World War I, supported by hydroelectric power, while World War II further expanded manufacturing and cemented Toronto’s role as a national economic hub. Demographically, Toronto was overwhelmingly British and Protestant through the 19th century, with strong English, Scottish, and Irish roots shaping its culture and institutions. In the early 20th century, immigration diversified the population, bringing significant Jewish, Italian, Eastern European, and later Southern European communities, many of whom worked in factories and construction. After World War II, suburbanization, expressway construction, and the decline of inner-city heavy manufacturing reshaped the city, while services, finance, and corporate headquarters grew in importance. Post-1960s immigration reforms dramatically transformed Toronto’s demographics, with large-scale immigration from the Caribbean, South Asia, East Asia, and Southern Europe. By 1990, Toronto was one of the world’s most multicultural cities, with a service- and finance-oriented economy replacing much of its earlier industrial base. Did you know this flag has become a symbol of resilience and community pride in Cabbagetown? What began as a nickname rooted in class prejudice became a badge of identity. Cabbagetown traces its name to the cabbage patches grown by Irish immigrants who settled here in the 1840s, fleeing the Great Famine. Over time, the neighbourhood endured poverty, displacement, and large-scale demolition, including the loss of much of the original community during the construction of Regent Park. But Cabbagetown’s story is also one of collective action. In the 1970s and 80s, residents came together to protect historic homes, resist high-rise development, and restore the neighbourhood’s character. Today, Cabbagetown stands as a reminder of how communities can reclaim their stories, and shape the city’s future. At the Museum of Toronto, we share the histories behind Toronto’s neighbourhoods and the people who fought to preserve them. #MuseumOfToronto #TorontoHistory #ThingsToDoToronto #torontoevents #didyouknow
