Have you ever tried growing dahlias from seeds? If not, you should try! 🌱 We start our seeds in late winter in the greenhouse, 1 seed per 4” pot. We only plant 1 seed per pot because we want to keep each new hybrid’s tubers separated from others at harvest time. After about 30 days of growth, we have beautiful seedlings with nice feeder roots. And after 65-70 days of growth, the seedlings begin to produce baby tubers. It’s the most magical thing!!! Each seed is a unique hybrid, different than any other dahlia in the world. 🌍 We plant in the field after frosty nights are done for the summer, then enjoy a bounty of new, unique blooms all summer!💐 If we want to save a first-year seedling to grow again next season, we dig and store the tuber clumps that form. It’s such a wonderful adventure, year after year. ✨ If you’d like to try growing dahlias from seed, make sure to watch for our Seed Sale next month. Here’s a quick clip showing how fast dahlia seedlings grow! I started these seeds on February 2nd, transplanted the first set on the 4th, and just 11 days later, most of them already have their first set of true leaves and already pushing their second set. I love dahlia babies, and so far we already have 1,000 thriving! Our seed-starting protocol: 🌱 We use ProMix blended with mycorrhizae in 50-cell trays, mixed with a bit of compost. 🌱 We’ve fed them once so far with a diluted fish fertilizer. 🌱 We water deeply only after the soil dries out — about every 4-5 days on average. 🌱 They stay under grow lights 24/7. How many are we planting this year? I’m aiming for 3,000… but honestly, I’m not sure. I guess I’ll stop when I run out of space inside to keep these baby plants healthy. 🤣 If you have any questions about our process, drop them below. Oh look I’ve got plastic baggies out again 😂🤣⁣ ⁣ Dahlias! Another thing you can sprout in a bag! Here’s how:⁣ ⁣ Get a paper towel damp & grab your dahlia seeds. Lay them out on said paper towel & fold over. Place into a plastic baggie & zip shut. Wait.⁣ ⁣ These are 8 days old! When you see roots you can open the baggie, pull out the germinated seeds & move to soil. ⁣ ⁣ They can germinate at vastly different times, so leave the ones that haven’t popped yet. And wait some more. You could have the next unicorn dahlia in there 🦄💜⁣

I was able to take 43 dahlia cuttings before the dog barked at the mail lady and woke one of the girls up. 🤪 But I’m at 193 total dahlia cuttings in just 11 days. Absolutely wild! Our “grow room” aka the ugly unfinished upstairs bathroom is working beautifully. It’s about 79 degrees up there! I have many rooted cuttings still available on my website for spring shipping. I’ll likely be selling special bundles of cuttings as well. Our rooted cuttings are inspected by the PA Dept of Agriculture, and we virus test suspicious cuttings. I’m hoping to be able to sell some of our varieties of cuttings as “virus tested cuttings.” #dahliafarm #dahliafarmer #dahliatubersale #dahliapropagation #plantpropagation

🌱 Where the Season Begins — Episode 2: Dahlia Seedlings Now that most of my dahlias have sprouted, it’s time to remove the humidity dome. Leaving the dome on too long traps moisture and limits airflow — which increases the risk of damping off (that sudden seedling collapse nobody wants). I remove the dome once about 70–80% of the tray has germinated and the cotyledons have opened. At this stage, I switch to bottom watering. Instead of watering from above, I add water to the tray below and let the soil absorb it from the bottom up. This: • Encourages deeper root growth • Prevents disturbing delicate stems • Reduces surface moisture (less fungal risk) • Promotes stronger seedlings overall The goal now is simple: Strong light. Good airflow. Even moisture — never soggy. Ever wondered how some growers are able to have so many plants of new or rarer dahlia varieties? They’re probably taking cuttings! Dahlias are extremely easy to propagate and there’s many different ways to do it. The easiest way, in my opinion, is to wake them up early in late winter or spring and take cuttings of the newly sprouting stalks. In the past few years I’ve experimented with many different ways to take cuttings. I’ve trialed different methods of when, how and what material I’m planting the cuttings in. What I’ve found is that no matter how you take your cuttings in spring, they’ll likely root. As long as you’re checking on them daily and giving them the attention and TLC they deserve, there’s really no wrong way to do it. This year, the sprouts I’ve taken have been the smallest and youngest I’ve ever cut. And guess what? They still rooted. Some even as small as 3/4 inch tall. I don’t use rooting hormone and I’m not using any fancy soil mixes or mediums this year. Just soil with some added vermiculite and they’re. still. rooting. As farmers and gardeners, it’s easy to see so many methods and recipes out there and to feel overwhelmed. However, I’m here to tell you - sometimes the easiest way gets the job done just as well. Because a job done, is still always better than a job still waiting to be finished! Don’t be afraid to experiment with what you have before going out and buying all the expensive materials… sometimes the best lessons are the ones that are self taught through trial and error 💕 #dahlias #dahliacuttings #dahliapropagation #dahliasale #dahliagrower
