Pterosaurs were a group of flying reptiles that lived alongside dinosaurs, spanning from the Triassic to the Cretaceous periods (about 225 to 66 million years ago). They had a wide range of sizes, from the small Anurognathus, with a wingspan of just 1 meter, to the enormous Quetzalcoatlus, which had a wingspan of 10-12 meters. Unlike modern birds, pterosaurs had membranous wings, supported by an elongated fourth finger, giving them unique flight capabilities. They were not dinosaurs but shared the same era and ecosystems, with some species being skilled hunters and others scavengers. Pterosaurs evolved various adaptations depending on their diet and environment. Some had long beaks and teeth, perfect for catching fish, while others had toothless beaks, ideal for snatching up small land animals. Their remains have been found on every continent, showing their wide distribution and diverse forms. Follow to see the best dinosaur and other prehistoric life content 🦕💫 . . Erythrosuchids were large, crocodile-like archosauriform predators that lived during the Early to Middle Triassic, after the Permian extinction. One of their likely prey species was Lystrosaurus, a stocky, tusked herbivore that dominated the Early Triassic landscape. Although Lystrosaurus populations declined during the Middle Triassic, there’s no evidence that predation by erythrosuchids alone caused their extinction. Instead, their disappearance was likely due to long-term environmental shifts and increased competition from emerging herbivores. Fossils found in the same regions suggest that erythrosuchids may have preyed on Lystrosaurus, but their extinction was not a direct result of being hunted—rather, it was part of a broader ecological turnover during Triassic recovery. 📹 Life on Our Planet (2023)

Throughout Earth’s history, five major mass extinctions have drastically reshaped the planet’s biodiversity. The Ordovician-Silurian Extinction, approximately 444 million years ago, stands as one of the earliest cataclysms, eliminating around 85% of marine species. It was likely precipitated by a series of ice ages, causing significant drops in sea levels that disrupted marine habitats. The Permian-Triassic Extinction, known as the “Great Dying,” remains the most devastating event in Earth’s history. Occurring around 252 million years ago, it wiped out nearly 96% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial species. The trigger is attributed to massive volcanic eruptions, causing widespread climate change and ocean acidification. This catastrophic event fundamentally altered life on Earth, paving the way for new species to evolve in the aftermath. The Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction, around 66 million years ago, marked the demise of the dinosaurs and about 75% of all species. A massive asteroid impact near the Yucatan Peninsula is the widely accepted cause, leading to drastic climate shifts and a global catastrophe. This extinction event cleared the ecological stage for the rise of mammals and eventually led to the flourishing diversity of life seen today. Like history? Follow us @HistoryPhotographed 🌟

Did you know Earth has already experienced five mass extinctions? 1. Ordovician-Silurian – 443 million years ago 2. Late Devonian – 372 million years ago 3. Permian-Triassic – 252 million years ago (a.k.a. The Great Dying) 4. Triassic-Jurassic – 201 million years ago 5. Cretaceous-Paleogene – 66 million years ago (goodbye, dinosaurs) Each one reshaped life on Earth… Each one wiped out the dominant species of its time. Now we have us. Advanced, intelligent—and consuming the planet at record speed. So, here’s the real question: Are we heading toward the sixth mass extinction? Or worse… are we causing it? 252 million years ago was when life on earth nearly disappeared for good. The ‘Permian-Triassic’ extinction event caused around 90% of life on earth to die, it was so bad that life on Earth did not fully redevelop for 10 million years. The extinction was caused by volcanic eruptions as a result of extremely high temperatures on the planet. The oceans then got too hot, causing 96% of marine life to also fall to this catastrophe. This event did come with some good, though. As this led to the start of the Triassic period, and ultimately, the dawn of the Dinosaurs. Lystrosaurus was a small, burrowing herbivore that lived during the Late Permian and Early Triassic, around 252 million years ago. Originally a low-ranking prey species, it survived the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, the deadliest event in Earth’s history, which wiped out nearly 90% of life. Massive volcanic eruptions in Siberia triggered climate chaos, acid rain, and oxygen depletion, devastating ecosystems and wiping out many top predators. With fewer competitors, Lystrosaurus thrived, becoming one of the most dominant land animals of the Early Triassic. Its burrowing lifestyle, ability to tolerate harsh conditions, and efficient lungs gave it a survival edge in the post-apocalyptic world. Though it eventually disappeared, its resilience helped shape the recovery of life after Earth’s worst extinction. 🎥 Life on Our Planet (2023)
