Tylosaurus was one of the largest marine predators of the Late Cretaceous, reaching lengths of up to 14 meters (46 ft). It belonged to the mosasaurs, a group of marine reptiles that dominated ancient oceans. Unlike sharks, Tylosaurus was an air-breathing reptile with a powerful tail, paddle-like limbs, and a distinctive reinforced snout used to ram prey. Fossils show it fed on fish, sharks, seabirds, and even other marine reptiles. Tylosaurus disappeared around 66 million years ago during the mass extinction event that wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs and many marine ecosystems. A true apex predator of prehistoric seas. Tylosaurus (Tylosaurus proriger), around 90–66 million years ago in what is now North America, primarily in the Western Interior Seaway. Tylosaurus was a giant mosasaur that reigned as the apex predator of the Late Cretaceous oceans. Unlike the long necked plesiosaurs of its time, this massive marine reptile was built for raw power and speed. It possessed a long, streamlined body and a powerful, shark like tail that propelled it through the water to ambush everything from flightless diving birds and sharks to other smaller mosasaurs. Its most distinctive feature was its hard, bony snout, which scientists believe it used as a battering ram to stun prey or rivals during territorial battles. Fast Facts Size: Up to 43 to 46 feet or 13 to 14 meters Weapon: Conical teeth and a reinforced bony ramming snout Location: Western Interior Seaway North America #Tylosaurus #Mosasaur #MarineReptile #Cretaceous #dinosaurs

Mosasaurus hoffmannii, possibly the largest lizard to ever exist…That’s right I said lizard. Mosasaurs are those famous giant marine reptiles that inhabited the seas during the late Cretaceous (and became extinct alongside the non-avian dinosaurs). At nearly 100 identified species ranging from about a meter to over 12 meters in length, these carnivorous monsters only emerged in the last 25 million years of the Age of Reptiles. And like other marine reptiles, mosasaurs came from land creatures that evolved to become fully aquatic. But unlike other marine reptiles, mosasaurs are most closely related to lizards. In fact, recent analyses place them in the clade Toxicofera as a close relative of monitor lizards and snakes (but likely closer to the former). Being in this clade means that it’s *possible* that mosasaurs could have been ancestrally venomous, but the status of living lizard groups like monitor lizards as venomous aren’t even resolved yet so this will likely remain speculative. What is NOT up for debate is how cool these giant lizards are. And this model of Mosasaurus hoffmani that once roamed New Jersey makes me glad that I can swim down the shore without encountering monstrous lizards. . . . . . #mosasaurus #mosasaur #tylosaurus #elasmosaurus #ichthyosaur #plesiosaur #dinosaurs #marinereptiles #cretaceous #fossils #paleontology #thefossilpark

Not a #shark for Shark Week! #Tylosaurus, a giant marine #lizard,, lived in the Late #Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. The tip of its nose lacks teeth, unlike other #mosasaurs which have teeth that go to the tip of the snout. I have long wondered if this means it rammed its prey? The “knob lizard with a prow” was named by Marsh in 1872 but, as you have come to know, many taxa named by Marsh, and Cope, have complex taxonomic histories, and this one is no exception, with Cope naming a skull in 1869 and then the two squabbled for a few years. For fun I will list the different names that have been applied to this taxon by those two. Working with late 1800s taxa can be… trying. I have many times shook my hands at the sky, angrily hurling silent invectives at the two Bone Wars participants. The only upside is their descriptions could fit in a single Tweet (or is it X now ;-)) and my typical IG description would have been a monograph to them :-)! #Macrosaurus - used already so wasn’t legit #Liodon #Rhinosaurus -used already as well, my goodness the internet is useful for naming animals today! Rhamphosaurus -used already #Tylosaurus -hooray, a winner! Used already means someone had used that genus name for a different animal already. The “rules” forbid using the same genus name twice to prevent confusion. At over 40’ and 7 tons (with est. over 50’!) it ranked as an apex predator of its day, surpassing the beastly #Cretoxyrhina shark which reached around 25’ and 5 tons on a just-feasted day (and thus how I work a shark into this post :-)). This exhibit is at the Mountain America Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point outside of Salt Lake City. If you love paleo and can only visit one place, Salt Lake City is an excellent choice with its proximity to so many epic museums on a 2 hr radius. I love the blue light and paint in this exhibit, it gives one the impression of being under the sea. #FossilCrates The holotype of #T. proriger looks much blunter to me than this popular cast, are they the same species? As a sauropod #dinosaur lad it might be best if I keep my nose clean here :-)!

Tylosaurus was the first true giant in the mosasaur world. At 80 million years old, these titans of the Cretaceous period preceded the Maastrichtian generation of giant mosasaurs like Prognathodon and Mosasaurus. Here, in the Texan waters of the early Campanian stage, Tylosaurus dominated the food chain, holding dominion even over other predators like Xiphactinus (the 17 foot killer fish), and Latoplatecarpus, a 15 foot fish-eating mosasaur. . . . #paleontology #fossilhunting #fossils #palaeontology #geology #northsulphurriver #tylosaurus
