This news was last week, but I didn’t catch it until now after the holiday. In September 2025, the Unicode Consortium officially approved the gender-neutral Chinese character (X也) for inclusion in Unicode 17.0. That means we will have a new Chinese character to learn/type. For context, we often used 他 as a gender-neutral pronoun for him/her. However, if we know the gender is a female, we would replace 亻 on the left side of the character with 女to type 她. If the object is not a person, we often used 它, which could be used for animal too. With the introduction of a new Chinese character, people can choose to replace the left side of the character with X to become X也, but the pronunciation will remain the same.
