Does having a stoma mean cutting out fibre? It’s a common question we get in clinic, and unfortunately one which doesn’t have much high quality evidence behind it. Before surgery, many people are told to expect a life of beige foods: white bread, plain rice, and saying goodbye to beans, mushrooms and popcorn. This however is mainly based on theory and expert opinion. What we do know, is that your dietary needs are highly individual. These can vary depending on the type of stoma, how recently surgery took place, or whether there are any ongoing complications or gut symptoms. The good news is that for many, with time and tailored support, it is absolutely possible to enjoy a satisfying and diverse diet again. This is my daily reality right now. My bladder spasms are so so bad. They are that forceful they bring tears to my eyes, they are incredibly uncomfortable and I'm terrified that some day soon, I'm going to have a spasm so strong that it's going burst the balloon or force it out of my bladder. I can have days where spasms like this happen every 5 minutes and I can have days where the spasms keep me awake all night. My bladder is rejecting the catheter, and right now, I have no quality of life. This is why I'm so desperate for a urostomy #cerebralpalsy #urostomy #catheter #neurogenicbladder #medicallycomplex

My 1am thoughts from the other night which I wasn’t quite sure I would post, but now I need to be honest so here it is all poured out. The last 4 weeks since surgery have been heavier than I ever expected. Complications I didn’t prepare for, a post-op collection, E. coli in my kidneys, an open wound that’s struggling to hear & now adjusting to a new refashioned urostomy stoma. It’s relentless. One thing after another, with barely any time to catch my breath. I’m exhausted in every sense not to mention the toll this also takes on Scott & Grace. I don’t know how to process a body that feels so out of control right now. Not at any point do I feel like ‘I’ve got this’. Please bear with me whilst I navigate this. The beginning of Stoma Social Club💜 💜When I had my surgery back in 2022, I was surprised to discover there wasn’t a local stoma support group nearby. I turned to online communities, but while they offered advice, they didn’t give me the sense of connection and belonging I was hoping for. 💜Then in 2024, when Sam had her unplanned ileostomy, we both realised how important it was to create something different — a safe, positive space where people could share experiences, support each other, and celebrate the life-saving, life-changing nature of our stomas. And so, FriendswithStomas was born. 💜From the start, we wanted to take things offline too. Real conversations, real friendships, real community. So we organised our very first meet-up at our lovely local pub, @roseandcrownpubsandridge . We thought a handful of people might come along… but 25 showed up! 🥹 💜Thanks to @colostomyuk , local flyers, and our social media, people found us , and the feedback was amazing. Everyone asked us to keep it going, so that’s how Stoma Social Club came to life.🌟 💜For us, it’s all about making sure no one feels alone. These meet-ups are a chance to chat openly, share stories, and build friendships in a supportive, welcoming space. We’re so excited to see where this grows, and we’d love your ideas and feedback along the way.
