DYThank you Van Morrison for inviting me to your 80th birthday party in Belfast, culminating in a seriously great show at the Waterfront Hall, supported by his daughter Shana and with some help from his mates Ronnie Wood and Chris Farlowe. Having seen him perform countless times over the years, it’s wonderful (and not a little bit surprising) to watch him get better as he gets older. His voice has hardly changed since the days of ‘Gloria’ and ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, while the songs from his new album ‘Remembering Now’ (a record we didn’t expect and honestly don’t deserve) are as good as anything he’s recorded in the last 30 years. Like Mick Jagger, Morrison manages to transcend time and space, emphatically proving he’s an artist who don’t look back. Tonight he kicked off with his favourite song, ‘Into the Mystic’ before careering through ‘And It Stoned Me’, ‘It’s All Over Now Baby Blue’ Back To Writing Love Songs’, and of course, ‘Gloria’. Born in 1945, two days before the end of the Second World War, his voice is the voice of another generation, a generation born into deprivation and optimism, full of earnest young men eager to prove themselves and desperate to be frivolous. One of these was George Ivan Morrison, a precocious R&B nut who proved to be a lot less frivolous than pretty much anyone he knew. Underestimate him at your peril. Oh, and Happy Birthday.
