And these are surveilling those who are even willing to test in the first place. Many symptomatic people may choose not to test at all anymore, especially now that the CARES Act has expired.
The difference between omicron BA.1 and now is that fully vaccinated or recent recoverees seem to be treating this as more of a nuisance than a public health emergency; those with prior protection from vaccines, boosters and prior infections are the most likely reason our hospitalization rates have remained flat instead of peaking for at least the past few weeks where we are. As long as hospitalization and death curves also remain that way wherever you are, your local healthcare system should be able to manage it.
However, just to compare — the Rø of original COVID was ~4, which means for every 1 infected person, they would on average spread it to 3-4 other people in a room who didn’t have immunity from a vaccine or prior infection.
The Rø of variant BA.5 is 18-19, which is as transmissible if not even more than measles. And yet these are infection numbers, not hospitalization and death rates; if the latter don’t similarly match or peak and most fully vaccinated/boosted are still recovering well and quickly, we’re going to save our bandwidth to guard against any more unnecessary (but understandable) pandemic fatigue.
