ARChinese wood carving is one of the country’s oldest and most respected crafts, with roots that stretch back to the Neolithic period and early imperial dynasties, where craftsmen shaped wood into both structural and decorative elements of buildings. Over time, varied regional schools such as Dongyang wood carving, boxwood carving, Chaozhou gilded wood carving and Fujian longan wood carving developed unique styles and techniques, showing how diverse China’s woodworking traditions really are.
Wood carving played both technical and cultural roles in Chinese architecture and art. It adorned temples, tombs, bridges, door frames, screens and carved panels, provided symbolic decoration like dragons, clouds and floral motifs, and emphasized the connection between structure and ornament. High-quality woods such as nanmu, rosewood, camphor and agarwood were preferred for their durability and grain, adding both strength and visual richness to the finished pieces.
Today’s woodcarvers continue these centuries-old traditions, combining precision hand tools, relief carving, hollow work and multi-layer techniques to produce pieces that honor the legacy of their craft. Rather than a single uniform style, Chinese wood carving represents an evolving set of regional practices and historical influences, all rooted in meticulous craftsmanship and deep cultural heritage.
