Time to test for mites!! Checking drone brood for Varroa mites is the best testing method, in my humble opinion. There is so much room for error when you do an alcohol wash. With an alcohol wash, you are gathering 300 bees out of a colony containing upwards of 50,000 individuals, and hope that you are getting a sample that is representative of the colony as a whole. Considering 80 to 90% of the mites are under the brood cappings greatly increases your chance of error. Sugar shakes are even worse. Do yourself a favor after you shake those bees in the powdered sugar. Do an alcohol wash. You’ll see more mites dislodged! If you think sugar shakes are more humane, think again. Those bees that you shook for 3 minutes in the sugar aren’t going to be very happy with the results!! I’d guess most won’t survive . (At least the alcohol wash is a quick death!! )However, I’d rather kill 100 drones than 300 workers doing a mite count. Especially this time of year, since the drones will soon be evicted in preparation for winter. Sticky boards for testing? No. Mite fall is a good indicator your treatment is working and/or to inform you of the presence of mites. If you just “look” at your bees and you see mites, your colony is already dead. Also, if you think you can just look at your bees as your mite test, you’d have to have x-ray vision to see underneath the boot cappings, where most of the mites will be when the colony is brooding. However, if you open 100 drone cells, you can get an excellent idea of how many mites you have in your hive. You can’t just open the capping and look. You have to pull out the pupae and really look. They hide!! Varroa mites prefer drone brood, and you can see at least 4 (pregnant) females were in that one cell!! (They all come out of the cell pregnant, with their brother’s offspring.) Gross! Und hier sieht man schön, wieso. 📖 Varroa Destructor ist ein Parasit, welcher Bienen und Brut anzapft und sich in der verdeckelten Brut vermehrt. 🧬 die westliche Honigbiene, so wie sie in weiten Teilen vorkommt, hat oft keine natürlichen Triebe mehr gegen diesen Parasiten anzukämpfen. Heute gängige Praxis ist, dieser Milbe mit Chemie zu begegnen. 💨 🌿 natürliche Methoden und Züchtungsversuche versuchen, einen alternativen Weg einzuschlagen. 💛 ❓ Nun habe ich in einem Stock diese eine Varroa gesehen. Was würdest du nun an meiner Stelle tun? 🤳🏼⤵️

Throwback to doing a varroa test on this heavily infested beehive during my inspecting days. Found a whole dang family of varroa in one cell! Creepy little things 🦀 What method do you use to track your varroa levels? While inspecting, the method I had to use was the alcohol wash. I couldn’t give out permits if levels were over 3% in the spring, so I had to be sure what levels we were dealing with to not spread varroa bombs around. However on a larger scale, only a percentage were tested but with the knowledge that most beekeepers treat the whole yard based on the sample size finding. #varroa #beekeepinggirl #honeybee #apiculture

Esse teste serve para contar os ácaros Varroa, um dos maiores inimigos das abelhas no mundo. Eles se alimentam das abelhas e transmitem doenças que podem destruir uma colônia inteira. Por isso fazemos o monitoramento: uma pequena amostra de abelhas é usada para verificar o nível de infestação. O objetivo é encontrar até 3 ácaros. Acima disso, a colmeia pode precisar de intervenção. Às vezes algumas abelhas precisam morrer para proteger milhares de outras e manter a colônia saudável. La #Varroa (Varroa destructor) es un #ácaro #ectoparásito que representa la mayor amenaza sanitaria para las abejas melíferas (Apis mellifera) a nivel mundial. A diferencia de lo que se creía anteriormente, investigaciones actuales confirman que se alimenta principalmente del cuerpo graso de las abejas (tejido vital para su inmunidad y metabolismo) y no solo de su hemolinfa. Impacto en la Colmena Debilitamiento físico: Causa malformaciones en alas y abdomen, reduce el tamaño de las abejas y acorta drásticamente su esperanza de vida. Vector de enfermedades: Actúa como un "inyector" de virus mortales, como el Virus de las Alas Deformadas (DWV) y el Virus de la Parálisis Aguda, potenciando su virulencia. Pérdida de productividad: Las colonias infestadas producen menos miel, tienen menos capacidad de pecoreo y pueden colapsar totalmente en pocos meses si no se tratan. Ciclo de Vida El ácaro tiene dos fases principales sincronizadas con la abeja: Fase forética: El ácaro adulto se adhiere a las abejas adultas para alimentarse y transportarse. Fase reproductiva: La hembra de varroa entra en las celdillas de cría justo antes de ser operculadas. Allí pone huevos, y las crías de varroa se alimentan de la larva de abeja en desarrollo. Control y Tratamientos (Actualizado a 2026) Para 2026, el manejo se enfoca en el Manejo Integrado de Plagas (MIP) debido a que el ácaro ha desarrollado resistencia a muchos químicos tradicionales. Tratamientos Orgánicos: Uso de ácidos naturales como el ácido oxálico (por sublimación o goteo) y el ácido fórmico, además de aceites esenciales como el timol. Tratamientos Químicos: El Amitraz sigue siendo utilizado por su eficacia, aunque se vigila de cerca la aparición de resistencias. Nuevas Tecnologías: Productos recientes como Norroa™ (basado en vadescana) actúan interrumpiendo específicamente la reproducción del ácaro a nivel proteico. Genética: Se está priorizando la cría de abejas con comportamiento higiénico (VSH), capaces de detectar y eliminar por sí mismas la cría infestada.
