The District is treating breeding sites near rivers to reduce the population of black flies, also called 'eye-biting flies,' but it takes time for treatments to take effect.⁠ ⁠ The flies earned their nickname because they tend to bite around the eyes and necklines of humans and domestic animals. They’re getting me,” Azusa resident Constance Yu said in what has become a common refrain for those living in the San Gabriel Valley. “They’re like little demons but tiny.” Tiny eye-biting black flies have been a nuisance in the foothills for years. However, the historic warm winter rainfall and the late-winter heatwave have caused the black fly population to explode in 2026.
