This is a year’s worth of PACE vegetation data. 🌱 NASA’s PACE satellite can measure subtle changes in leaf color by detecting pigments like chlorophyll, carotenoids, and anthocyanins. Together, these pigments can help scientists assess how healthy the plants are! This visualization shows a full year of vegetation data from March 2024 to March 2025. Magenta represents anthocyanins, green represents chlorophyll, and cyan represents carotenoids. The brighter the colors are, the more leaves are in that area. White represents areas where all three pigments were roughly equal. Watch how the colors change and move. This illustrates how vegetation changes throughout the seasons and how plants adapt to stresses like weather fluctuations. #Earth #NASA #PACE #Science #Data

"The forest is the town of trees Where they live quite at their ease, With their neighbors at their side Just as we in cities wide." - Annette Wynne 🌳 Today we are celebrating @unesco's World Poetry Day and @unitednations' International Day of Forests with a poem called 'The Forest' by Annette Wynne and a story about how maps can improve forest biomass estimates. Fluctuations in the carbon-rich biomass held within the world’s forests can contribute to, or slow, climate change. A series of new maps of above ground biomass, generated using space observations, is set to help our understanding of global carbon cycling and support forest management, emissions reduction and sustainable development policy goals. Above ground biomass refers to the stem, bark, branches and twigs of woody components of vegetation. As photosynthesis withdraws carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it stores carbon in vegetation in an amount comparable to that of atmospheric carbon. The vegetation has the potential to sequester more carbon in the future or to contribute as an even larger source. New maps, generated by a research team working as part of our Climate Change Initiative, provide a global view of above ground biomass distribution and spatial density over three separate years – 2010, 2017 and 2018. The maps are derived from a combination of data, depending on the year, from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission, Envisat’s ASAR instrument and JAXA’s Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS-1 and ALOS-2), along with additional information from Earth observation sources. Earth observation data are routinely used to validate the accuracy, or identify biases, in climate models. The new maps, provided at 100 m resolution, have trimmed uncertainty estimates and will help to further constrain models. Morning in a tropical garden. This garden has been under our care for more than three years. As a landscape maintenance team, we work with what already exists. We are not involved in the planning, design, or planting process. Often, we find plants placed in the wrong conditions — shade plants exposed to full sun, sun-loving plants struggling in poor soil, and growing media that was never properly prepared. The biggest challenge is not the plants, but restoring the soil and helping the garden adapt over time. Through consistent care, observation, and patience, we slowly guide the garden toward balance. A mature tropical garden is not built overnight — it is grown, corrected, and cared for, every single day. Trust the process. Une grosse averse n’est pas la meilleure chose qui puisse arriver après une canicule… 🧐 ° Cette expérience réalisée par le Dr. Rob Thompson de l’Université de Reading (@uniofreading ) montre à quel point l’eau met du temps à s’infiltrer dans un sol sec. Ce qui explique pourquoi de fortes averses après un épisode caniculaire peuvent causer des inondations. ⛈️ ° L’eau contenue dans le verre face au sol avec de l’herbe humide met seulement 10 secondes pour être absorbée. En revanche, pour un sol plus sec lors d’un été “classique”, l’eau met 53 secondes à être absorbée. Quant au verre retourné sur un sol très sec, l’eau n’est toujours pas absorbée au bout de 4 minutes ! 😲 ° La végétation (herbe et arbres) rend le sol moins compact, grâce aux racines, ce qui favorise l’infiltration de l’eau. Lors de fortes pluies, les racines absorbent une partie de l’eau qui s’évapore ensuite par la tige et les feuilles. Un sol sec et sans végétation ne peut pas absorber de grandes quantités d’eau.
