DRCats are not small dogs and the way they show up in their illnesses demonstrate that!
The top 5 reasons I see cats when I’m doing my relief shifts include:
🩺 Vomiting—either it’s because of something they ate or a symptom of a disease like kidney insult, IBD etc I tend to have to do a little digging to figure out if I’m recommending blood work, x-rays or both!
🩺 Inappropriate urination—this can be a common sign of a UTI or could indicate a more complicated reason like FLUTD(feline lower tract disease) which can be a myriad of “whys” including bladder stones. I am also worried about chronic conditions like kidney disease or even diabetes. Don’t be surprised if your veterinarian starts with a urinalysis and then levels up to include blood work and x-rays.
🩺 Inappetence—I mean anything can cause this. Areas I search are the mouth to rule out dental disease and internal with more lab work!
🩺 Limping—cats are notorious for jumping off really high things or getting legs caught in doors/drawers etc. If your cat is an outside dweller, the risk of injury is only heightened. Depending on my physical exam and severity of signs, I’m either hunting for an abscess or recommending x-rays!
🩺 Upper respiratory signs—usually this is viral but can be hard to pinpoint. Depending on how much crud is coming out of nose/eyes may lead me down supportive care with fluids, topical ointment or drops for the eyes(after ruling corneal lesions out) and a probiotic for immune support. Or I may consider starting antibiotics…
🩺 Trauma/fight wounds—usually these guys are super ouchy and wounds are evident but when I’m not seeing anything obvious on the outside, x-rays are probably going to be advised!

When she graduated, we were lucky enough to have her join the team at WesVet as a Licensed Veterinary Technician! Jacqueline brings joy, laughter, and a little bit of silliness to every shift — and the pets (and people) absolutely adore her. 💛
