What is Vision Zero? Walk, roll, drive or ride: everyone has the right to arrive safely. We are committed to ensuring road safety for everyone in the community and to work collaboratively with community partners towards a common goal of Vision Zero – mobility free of fatalities and major injuries. The goal is to reach ZERO major injuries and fatalities on our roads.our roads. https://www.calgary.ca/roads/safety/vision-zero.html? In 2025, 15 pedestrians lost their lives That is more than one person a month dying in a collision on Calgary roads. This figure is an 11-year high. A 225% year-over-year increase. An additional 20 motorists were killed. An entire community is impacted when this happens, and the pain reverberates through our city. These our moms, dads, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, classmates, aunts, uncles, teammates, friends, teachers, coaches and neighbours. https://youtu.be/J6UEstpfsZk?si=ha6Plmz-atZKHaGl&sfnsn=mo @everyone #RoadrunnerDrivingSchool #calgary #RoadSafety #NewDrivers

A 12-year-old is in hospital right now with a broken leg. Multiple drivers watched him lying in that crosswalk and kept moving. This is not a fluke. Calgary logged 136 hit-and-run collisions between 2024 and mid-2025. Last year, 15 people died on these roads — an 11-year high. The city's own estimate puts the total societal cost of 2024 collisions at $1.4 billion. That number lives in your hospital wait times, your insurance premiums, and your property tax bill — which is already absorbing a $28 million chunk of the CPS budget increase needed to cover the enforcement hole left when the province killed photo radar on provincial highways in April 2025. The province made that call. We are paying for it. Council approved $7.5 million for Vision Zero in December. The city launched an awareness video campaign. AI is being deployed to flag the most dangerous intersections, with findings due Q2 2026. These are real moves — and none of them compel a driver to stop for a child on the ground. Fifty-seven percent of pedestrian collisions happen on arterial roads — the wide, fast corridors built to move cars — which tells you exactly what this city has spent decades optimizing for. The province still has not responded to Council's request to restore photo radar enforcement. The AI crosswalk review lands in a few months. In the meantime: what does it say about us that stopping is apparently optional?

This needs to stop. 38 people were killed on Calgary roads in 2025. Moms, dads, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, classmates, coaches and neighbours. Each one was just going about their day. This is not just data. These are people. And it is time for a wake-up call. We’re working with @calgarypolice to end this for good. Several previously passed road safety motions are recommended to be postponed or scaled back at the March 10th Vancouver Council meeting, “with the objective of freeing up staff capacity in order to better implement Council’s priorities” This is what happens when you starve the city budget. 🐢We’re especially disheartened to see motions that we worked hard to organize for and celebrated a victory from being slow rolled or axed. The promised 9 new bus lanes are already terribly behind schedule, and adding truck side guards to the city-owned fleet moving along at a snail’s pace. As advocates this is an important reminder that it ain’t over til it’s over. 🐌See the full report back on outstanding council motions on this week’s council agenda at the city website. There are plenty included on other topics as well!

Calgary's pathways and surface streets have a new rulebook — and you didn't write it. Electric dirt bikes running six thousand watts or more are blowing through intersections on Memorial Drive and cutting across Bow River pathways while the city watches from three different jurisdictions with three different toolboxes. Calgary Bylaw owns the pathways. Calgary Police own the Traffic Safety Act on public roads. Alberta Transportation owns the legislation. Nobody owns the problem. The fines for getting caught are real and they are steep. The odds of getting caught are close to zero. No plate means no dashcam evidence. No plate means the red-light camera has nothing to read. And no police service is initiating a high-speed chase through a dog-walker corridor on a Saturday afternoon — nor should they. That is the correct call on public safety. It is also exactly why the streets currently belong to whoever has the nerve to use them. This is not a staffing problem or a political will problem. It is a legal architecture problem — the rulebook was written before a bicycle-shaped machine could quietly hit highway speeds with no registration, no insurance, and no plate. Until Alberta rewrites that architecture, the 32/500 rule sitting on the books is technically iron-clad and practically decorative. The riders already did that math. The question is when the city starts doing it too.

⚠️ SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER ⚠️ On the evening of Thursday, March 5, 2026, ambulances, tow trucks, fire engines, peace officers, maintenance vehicles & police vehicles will be parked beside one of Calgary’s busiest roads to remind drivers they need to slow down & move over. 🚨 These vehicles will activate their flashing lights & park near the ramps in both directions of 16 Avenue N.E., between 36 Street & Barlow Trail N.E., to bring attention to the importance of slowing down on roadways where emergency personnel are doing their jobs. It is critical that drivers recognize the danger present to workers tending to emergencies & other work on the side of the road. ℹ️ When an emergency vehicle, tow truck, or maintenance vehicle, including a snowplow, is stopped with flashing lights activated, motorists are required to slow down & move over to another lane whenever possible. Penalties for failing to slow to 60 km/h, or the posted speed limit if lower, in the lane adjacent to an emergency vehicle can result in a $243 fine & 3 demerits. Moving to another lane when safe to do so is always best practice. 🚫 Fines for speeding while passing an emergency vehicle or road service vehicle while stopped on the side of the road with the flashing lights activated are doubled & can range from $163 to $991. A mandatory court appearance is required for any motorist travelling 51km/h or more over the speed limit. 📺 Watch the full media availability by visiting our YouTube page, linked on our profile.
