The science- Fusion of the epiphyses (growth plates) in the long bones occurs in adolescence and once these growth plates fuse, vertical bone growth stops which means your height can’t increase anymore. For boys on an average for this fusion is 16-18yrs and for girls it’s 14-15yrs. This is when growth hormone production slows down and epiphyses fuse. My observation with patients is that there are natural ways to increase the growth hormone production which can help you reach optimal height. These include Adequate protein in your diet. Ensuring your calcium and Vit D levels are on the higher end of normal. Playing Sports - sp ones that include stretching of the long bones like badminton, swimming, basket ball .All can help when you are still within the age limit of growth. Frankly, I’m Not sure if there are scientific studies for this,but I have seen plenty of kids who come to my clinic do really well with this protocol, hence thought of sharing. It is also crucial for bone health, immunity, weight and blood sugar management. 🔸Vitamin B12- it plays a key role in brain development, neurological functions and nerve conduction. It also helps in red blood cell formation. Hence crucial for optimum haemoglobin being formed. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause tiredness, fatigue headaches and can lower immunity. 🔸Iodine - it is an essential component of thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency can impair the function of thyroid gland and can cause goitre. If iodine requirements are not met the thyroid gland cannot synthesise adequate thyroid hormones leading to hypothyroidism. 🔸Iron - it is a major component of hemoglobin and it also helps carry oxygen throughout the body. Iron deficiency can cause fatigue, headaches, cold hands and feet, shortness of breath, hair fall and worsen chronic condition. Today is vitamin D Day! One of the most common questions I get, is where we get our vitamin D from. Because we go 4 months without seeing the sun, we do need supplements to avoid deficiency. Once a month, our medic administers us with our vitamin D tablets which deliver the equivalent of 50,000IU. I had my first dose in May, so this is the third round for me. We also have SAD lamps (light therapy) which also helps us through the darkness, albeit in a different way. This is just another one of the quirks of living in Antarctica, and has become part of normal life for all of us.
