Your baby only naps 30–45 minutes… and you’re starting to panic. Before you stretch wake windows or assume your baby is a “bad napper,” I want you to read this: 🧠 Most babies do not consolidate naps until ~5–6 months (and many later). This is because infant sleep cycles are short, about 30–50 minutes, and linking cycles during the day requires neurological maturity that simply isn’t there yet. Night sleep consolidates first. Day sleep comes later. So short naps in the first months? 👉 Biologically normal. Here’s the reframe that changes everything: Naps have ONE job. To relieve the sleep pressure that builds while your baby is awake. That’s it. A nap does not need to be: * 1+ hours * independent * in a crib to be restorative. A 35-minute nap that reduces sleep pressure = a successful nap. Short naps only become a problem when: * wake windows are too long * total daytime sleep is too low * or expectations don’t match biology This is why chasing longer naps often backfires parents stretch awake time, babies get overtired, and naps get even shorter. What to do instead (save this): ✔️Keep wake windows age-appropriate, comment “wake windows” to get my free guide ✔️ Prioritize total sleep in 24 hours ✔️ Use contact/carrier/stroller naps if needed ✔️ Help extend/connect those naps if you’d like Length comes with development, not pressure. The timing NEEDS to be right if you want to be successful at sleep training without any tears and if you want to help your baby start taking long naps and getting great night sleep. Even a baby like mine who puts herself to sleep for every nap and bedtime doesn’t sleep well if the timing is off, so finding the wake windows that work best for them is essential. My schedules have longer wake windows than what many apps and other sleep consultants recommend, but I find my awake times work MUCH better for gently sleep training even if baby looks ready for sleep earlier than that. If they don’t have that perfect sleep pressure built up, you won’t be able to get them down with cribside comforting and they will have a lot more wakings. You may think your baby can’t make it, but I promise they can if you keep them stimulated and happy! It’s so worth it after a long nap/long night of sleep.
