That mindset kills most people’s running goals before they even begin. Here’s what actually works: 1️⃣ Start small — like, embarrassingly small. 30 seconds of running is enough. 2️⃣ Talk to yourself like a best friend. Be kind. Be encouraging. 3️⃣ Make a specific plan the night before. Studies show this makes you 2.5x more likely to actually run. The biggest mistake I see beginners make is the “𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐰𝐨𝐬”. And I’m not referring to Toddler Tantrums 😭 Runners (even experienced runners trying to increase their training), often try to run too far, run too fast, and too soon (i.e. too often). 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐫: Set yourself small, achievable goals. If you’ve never run before or haven’t run since school PE, you can’t expect to run 5km without stopping. The couch to 5k app is a great way to start running as it incorporates a walk/run technique which is ideal for beginners. 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭: As a beginner aim to run at “Conversational Pace” – i.e. you would still have enough breath to be able to hold a conversation with someone. If you are running and don’t feel as though you can’t hold a conversation, you need to SLOW DOWN 😮‍💨 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐨𝐧: One of the biggest mistakes is trying to run EVERY day! 😱 Even if this is a short distance, if your body isn’t used to running every day you significantly increase your risk of injury. Even elite athletes have rest days. You need these rest days to give your body time to repair and recover 😴 I see social media posts with people celebrating their ‘running streak’. This is something I would highly recommend you AVOID! Running 3-4 times a week is plenty 👍 On your non running days you can keep active by walking, cycling, swimming, pilates, yoga or strength & conditioning. If running is too hard, it’s not going to be enjoyable and you are less likely to stick to it. It’s ok to walk in a marathon – you still earn the same medal as everyone else Let’s get one thing straight…if you crossed the finish line of a marathon, half marathon or 10k…whether you ran every step or mixed in some walking breaks, you still did the marathon or what ever distance you are doing. You get the same medal. You covered the same 26.2 miles. And you earned every single stride. Run/walk is not ‘cheating’ the distance – it’s actually a smart, proven strategy…know to many as ‘jeffing’. Jeffing is a run-walk interval training technique developed by Olympian and marathon runner Jeff Galloway. Many runners have hit personal bests using this method, especially in longer races where pacing and energy management are key, and certainly useful in tough conditions where there is incline/decline or hot weather. It’s definitely not just for beginners. Many seasoned athletes use it to stay strong later in the race, reduce injury risk, and maintain a sustainable rhythm/pace. Jeffing also encourages many more to get into running too as makes it less daunting and more accessible and enjoyable. So please let’s stop asking people, “Did you walk any of it?” It really doesn’t matter. What matters is that they showed up, put in the work, and crossed the finish line. That’s the real win. Benefits of Run/Walk racing: 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️Reduces fatigue and muscle breakdown over long distances 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️ Helps maintain a consistent pace, especially in the second half of the race 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️ Lowers injury risk by allowing recovery breaks 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️ Makes the mental challenge more manageable by breaking the race into smaller chunks 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️ Improves endurance over time by building time on feet 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️ Increases finish rates – more people make it to the end when they pace smarter Your marathon/race is yours. Our skiff slowly glided to the beach to view a mom and cub grazing on sedge grass. The cub, curious of us, did a bluff charge, running directly at us and stopping short before contact. He just reached the water before standing up to get a better look at us and see how we would react to his charge. Realizing that we were not threatened by his performance, he decided to go back to his mom and continue eating. these exercises of communication help cubs learn about their environment and practice social skills.
