Former U.S Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy visited Charlotte Tuesday as part of a national initiative to address loneliness and social isolation. Murthy met with community groups across Charlotte, including a stop at the Do Greater Charlotte creative tech lab, where he spoke with a handful of high school students about how social media and the pandemic have increased feelings of isolation. It's a concern, Murthy says he often hears from students. “They’re concerned that social media is often making them lonelier,” Murthy said. And that it's contributing to their anxiety and to their depression.” Full story: WFAE.org or link in bio. 📝: Elvis Menayese 📸: Elvis Menayese #wfae #704 #lonelinesspandemic #USSurgeonGeneralVivekMurthy

A four-day festival wrapped up in Charlotte over the weekend. The Lavagem Festival honors Brazilian indigenous people and the African diaspora through music and dance. A dance procession made its way from a parking lot onto Shamrock Drive in east Charlotte. Children dressed in white walked alongside women carrying flowers on their heads. Tamara Williams helped organize the festival. “The Lavagem is a celebration in Brazil where they cleanse the city,” Williams said. "They start at the beginning of the year in all white to cleanse, to bring in good energy.” Williams started hosting the festival to help unite the community after the COVID-19 pandemic. Dandha Da Hora, who is from Brazil, came from California to celebrate. Duke Energy is asking state regulators for permission to develop new fossil fuel resources to meet growing electricity demand driven by population growth and potential new AI data centers. The North Carolina Utilities Commission held its final public hearing on Duke’s proposed carbon and resource plan Wednesday night at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. Environmental and climate advocates say the plan delays investment in clean energy in favor of natural gas and coal. “We really just want clean, affordable, renewable energy sources,” said Rachael Radar, who spoke at the hearing. Hundreds of people gathered in uptown Charlotte on Monday to view alternative concepts for adding toll lanes to I-77 south of uptown. The concepts were showcased during a three-month pause on the project by the DOT. The designs, which focused on preserving green space, adding bike lanes and reconnecting communities, were part of the “Reimagining 77 South” exhibit. Taylor Harrington, who studied urban design, had her concept on display at the Dubois Center. She proposed adding shuttles to free up the congested interstate and give people an alternative way to travel between busy zones. "We would have these autonomous shuttles running nonstop all the time, going from these three hubs that we're proposing, which would be a mixed-use hub,” Harrington said. "That people would park their cars, get coffee, drop their kids off at daycare, get groceries, save time on errands." More than 30 concepts, including submissions from professional architects and students, were entered. Amaya Woliansky, 10, was among those who submitted a design and displayed it at the Dubois Center. She says she’s pleased to see community members getting involved. Many Catholics across the Charlotte region gathered on Wednesday to mark Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season. That season includes 40 days of prayer, fasting and repentance leading up to Easter. At St. Peter Catholic Church in uptown Charlotte, hundreds of people attended the church's noon Mass. Clergy there distributed ashes to worshippers' foreheads, symbolizing humility, repentance and renewal. “It’s just a reminder of the sacrifices that Jesus made for us,” said Sarah, who is visiting Charlotte from California and used only her first name for privacy reasons. “And it’s just a little bit of what we can give back. It’s a time for self-reflection. So I love this season.” For many Catholics, Lent is also a time to give something up as a personal sacrifice. Brambleberry vines clung to the sleeves of environmental activist Robin Greenfield as he reached down to uproot a green, leafy weed. “OK, who knows who we have here?” he asked, holding up a plant that looked all the world like chard. Someone in the group guesses “dock,” and Greenfield confirms. He’s leading a foraging walk around Davidson College with over 30 people in tow. “So, the ones with the red, it’s not that they’re toxic,” asked Davidson student Sophia Knowles. She’s looking to start a foraging club at the college. “They’re just bitter?” Greenfield is not only educating people about foraging — the practice of finding, identifying and eating wild things — he’s also walking the walk. Environmental educator Catherine Robertson pointed inside a row of water-filled plastic tubs, where larvae and salamanders scooted. A gaggle of kids tromped along the rocks of Porter Branch Creek in the McDowell Nature Preserve, scooping up critters with green dip nets and depositing their samples in white buckets. “Today, we're having a Stream Watch program, and they're going to take dip nets and buckets and actually look for a little macroinvertebrates, salamanders and amphibians,” Robertson said. “[They’ll] be able to identify them and see what type of water quality we have in this stream based on what they find.” This is part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water’s Creek Week, an annual event that’s about raising awareness about environmental stewardship. But what is a creek? Robertson said creeks and streams are the same: They’re small branches of water that feed our lakes and rivers. Mecklenburg County has over 3,000 miles of streams, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services. Starting Sunday, the streets of Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood will be a little emptier. The city is ending a six-month pilot program that allowed vendors to sell food, clothes and art on the street — a decision that followed years of complaints about blocked sidewalks and unfair competition with brick-and-mortar businesses. But not everyone in the neighborhood is happy to see the vendors go. On a cold, cloudy afternoon in NoDa, Avery Britt sets up a metal clothing rack on a patch of grass beside the sidewalk. He pops opens a plastic bin and pulls out sweatshirts, button-ups, T-shirts and jackets — some printed with his own designs. “The goal is ultimately to have like a whole rack of just my clothes,” Britt said. A few feet away, vendor Alii Granados straightens her own racks filled with purses, belts, skirts and vintage coats. Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, is underway and will continue through late next month, with numerous events in Charlotte to observe it. For Muslims, the month is marked by fasting from sunrise to sunset, along with increased prayer, charity and reflection. Each evening, that fast is broken with iftar, a meal traditionally shared with family, friends and the wider community. One place in Charlotte where that tradition comes to life, night after night, is La Shish Kabob. For the past 14 years, the east Charlotte restaurant has hosted a nightly Ramadan buffet, turning the space into a gathering point after sundown. Long tables fill with families, friends and first-time visitors, many arriving just as the sun sets to break their fast together. Charlotte Douglas International Airport will build new walking trails for the dogs at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control, as construction begins on the land currently used for the current paths. Airport officials have offered to build a new set of walking trails for the shelter’s dogs on airport-owned land adjacent to the facility. The new trails will be about 10 feet wide and loop through a wooded area east of the shelter. According to an ACC spokeswoman, construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks, and the paths will remain accessible and free from construction impacts well into the future.
