So what does a veterinary pathologist do? There are usually two main types of pathologists, clinical who work on blood samples and cells under microscopes and then anatomical pathologists who do post mortems (examining the body of animals after death) and checking tissue samples under microscopes. 🐾 What I'm doing in this video is cutting tissue samples into small pieces to look at it under microscope. This case was a post mortem case of an old dog that was not doing well and owners had to say goodbye to him. They wanted to know why he was doing so poorly. This can make the muscles twitch or move on their own for a short time. This is called a postmortem reflex. It can look shocking, but it is a normal reaction of the body after death. After death, muscles don’t instantly freeze forever. As oxygen disappears, muscles first relax, then stiffen (a process called rigor mortis), and later loosen again as tissues break down. Gases from decomposition can build up, shifting limbs, arching the back, or even forcing air through the throat—creating groans or sighs that once terrified grave watchers.
