But explanation gives the other person the microphone. So instead of defending, I asked one calm question: “What would it take for us to work together effectively on this?” No emotion. No justification. Just structure. When a conversation gets heated, don’t add more words. Interrupt the pattern. Ask the precise question. Control returns instantly.
