Let’s wolf down some knowledge! Wolf spiders are among some of the more plentiful and widespread spiders on earth; inhabiting every continent except Antarctica, these spiders have done quite well. One main reason for their success is their versatility. Across most habitats these spiders have diversified to fill just about every possible spider niche their body plan will allow. Without the aid of potent venom, most species overpower their prey before their venom takes its full effect, this has resulted in many species prioritizing larger and larger body plans to survive. While they may look intimidating, wolf spiders are quite timid and shy spiders; they’re very reluctant to bite even if provoked. There’s no reason to fear these awesome little arachnids, and I hope this video helps to illustrate that point quite well! Feeling like every mum on the last day of school holidays—this mumma wolf spider is carrying the load (literally) with all her babies on her back! She was handed into the Australian Reptile Park after being mistaken for a funnel-web! All spiders that aren’t needed for our life-saving antivenom program are safely released back into the wild. . . . Can you imagine having to carry around over ONE HUNDRED babies on your back??? This is the life of a wolf spider female. If you see a wolf spider with a big white thing on its abdomen, this means that her egg sac hasn’t hatched yet. After it hatches, this is what it looks like. The babies only stay on mama’s back for about a week. After that, they’re ready to go out on their own. Only a fraction of those babies will end up surviving to adulthood. • • • #entomology #spiders #arachnid #spider #entomologist #nature #wildlife #animals #naturevideos

🔥Fun fact: Most female spiders create a silken sac to house their eggs, then conceal it safely nearby. But roaming spiders like the wolf spider hunt their meals on the go — so what’s a busy mama to do? Road trip! She carries her eggs with her, and when they hatch her spiderlings will ride safely aboard her body until they’re old enough to venture out on their own. Thinking of stepping on that spider? 🕷️ You might want to think twice – here's why! 😱 "Did you know that some spiders carry their babies on their back? Stepping on one could cause a swarm of tiny spiderlings to scatter everywhere! 🏃‍♂️💨 The most common spiders known for this are Wolf Spiders. They keep their spiderlings close for protection, making them unique yet surprising house guests. Next time, consider relocating them instead of squashing! #ThePestNerd Special thanks to @zackdfilms 💪 #SpiderFacts #WolfSpider #BabySpiders #PestAwareness #NatureSurprises #SpiderSafety #ThinkTwice #ArachnidLife #Spiderlings #HomePestControl #SpiderAdvice #DidYouKnow #CreepyCrawlies #NatureEducation #PestControlTips #WildFacts #SpidersAtHome #FunFactFriday #BugLife #StayInformed

I made this as a simple intro to “true” spiders vs. tarantulas for a general audience, but for the nerds who want to know a little more: All spiders are in the scientific order Araneae. True spiders belong to the infraorder “Araneomorphae,” and the other major group of spiders is Mygalomorphae, which includes tarantulas as well as trapdoor spiders and funnel-web spiders (I didn’t really discuss the other two in this vid because 1. More complicated 2. I don’t keep the other two as much/have enough footage to do so). The easiest way to tell apart these two groups are the chelicerae (fangs): True spiders (Araneomorphae) have opposing mouthparts that pinch and usually just two lungs while Mygalomorphs have chelicerae that move up and down and have four lungs! So basically we have: Araneae (all spiders) ⬇️ Mygalomorphs and Araneamorphs ⬇️ ⬇️ Tarantulas, funnel webs, trapdoors ⬇️ Orb weavers, wolf spiders, jumping spiders, widows, many more In the spider-keeping hobby, this distinction is often simplified and focused on care differences rather than evolutionary context. But this distinction is hugely important and fascinating in scientific research when looking at evolutionary divergence, molecular evolution, venom and silk research, and ecological function

Meet the Two-Toned Wolf Spider—nature’s little genius! 🕷️💡 These spiders are not your average eight-legged creatures. They have impressive hunting skills and can even learn from their experiences! Talk about brains and beauty. They’ve got a “plan” for everything—whether it’s stalking prey or avoiding danger. 🐾 And did you know they can even jump?! One minute they’re sneaking around, the next—BOOM—up they go. #spider #smartspiders #wolfspider #naturegenius #creepycrawlers #spiderfacts #SpiderLovers

Peekaboo 💥 Cobalt blue tarantula (Cyriopagopus lividus) coming out to say hi. Tarantulas don’t have a good sense of sight. Unlike some spiders that use their large eyes to track/hunt prey (jumping spiders, wolf spiders), tarantulas pickup on vibrations and movement to sense their preys presence. Many will also construct/lay down large web mats and trip lines around their burrow which essentially become an extension of that sensory system as they feel the movement on the web. That is why this spider came bolting out when I tapped on the the web. • #reptiliatus #spider #scary #reel #viral #instagram #tarantula #spidersofinstagram #arachnid #cobaltbluetarantula #cyriopagopus #cyriopagopuslividus

While peeling back and revealing the underside of leaves, I found this large female American Nursery Web Spider (Pisaurina mira). These spiders often get mistaken for wolf spiders due to their similar appearance. However, the two spiders can distinguished from one another by their eye placement. American Nursery Web Spiders are however in the same family that fishing spiders are in. These females of this species will bind leaves together with their silk to build a protective nursery-like barrier to house their eggs in from predators. This is where their name originates from. Despite their large size that may be intimidating for some, these spiders are very skittish and possess extremely mild venom that affects humans! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio!
