CACanada Work Permit Processing Time Update
LMIA-based work permit applications are currently taking around 4 to 5 months for approval, sometimes even longer depending on the visa office and background checks.
These timelines apply mostly to inside-Canada applications (change of status or extensions). Applicants from outside Canada may face additional delays due to biometrics, background verification, and document review.
📄 PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) files are also seeing longer processing times. After new language proof requirements and policy changes, IRCC is taking extra time to verify eligibility and documents before issuing work permits.
IRCC is processing tens of thousands of LMIA-based and PGWP applications every month, while also managing backlogs in PNP, Express Entry, and TRV files. These high volumes mean it’s important to apply early, maintain valid status, and avoid gaps in your work authorization.
